During the last few days Angolan security forces have arrested and arbitrarily detained several African nationals who they also subjected to cruel and inhuman treatment. Our organisations condemn these serious violations of migrants’ human rights and urge the Angolan authorities to put an end to this violence and to respect the international and regional legal instruments that Angola has ratified, and also draw the attention of the home countries of these migrants to the gravity of the situation.

In the report “Ivory Coast: choosing between justice and impunity” in French released today, FIDH, MIDH and LIDHO, its member organisations in Ivory Coast, point out that despite the renewal of the Special Investigation and Examination Unit (CSEI), judicial advances against those responsible for human rights violations during the 2010/2011 post-electoral crisis that left more than 3000 dead, remain insufficient.

Paris, Pretoria, December 8, 2014 – Civilians in South Sudan have been paying a huge price since the outbreak, on December 15, 2013, of the conflict which opposed the forces loyal to the President Salva Kiir and those supporting the former Vice President Riek Machar.

In its mission report on South Sudan, FIDH raises serious concerns over the risks of a further deterioration of the human rights and humanitarian situation in the country if no effective measures are taken to break the cycle of violence and impunity which currently prevail.

In a letter addressed to the International Criminal Court (ICC) Registrar, FIDH expresses its concerns regarding the consequences that the Registrar’s reform project (ReVision project) could have on the victims’ participation and legal representation in ICC proceedings.

“FIDH supports the reform process, but remains concerned that some aspects of the proposed reforms may fundamentally affect the rights of victims to participate and obtain legal representation” said Karim Lahidji, FIDH President.

On 6 and 7 November 2014, FIDH and AMDH held an international seminar in Bamako on transitional justice and national reconciliation in Mali, opened by Prime Minister Moussa Mara. The 230 participants adopted a roadmap for the reconciliation process in Mali which rejects any form of amnesty for past crimes.

The signatories organisations filed a complaint with a plaintiff triggering criminal proceedings today, for submission to the most senior examining magistrate of the Bamako Commune III Court of First Instance, for crimes against humanity and war crimes on behalf of 80 women and girls, for rape and sexual violence committed during the period that armed groups occupied northern Mali in 2012 and 2013.

Ouagadougou, Paris, 30 October 2014 FIDH and MBDHP condemn the violence that occurred this morning in Burkina Faso and call on protesters and security forces to restore calm and maintain peace. Information gathered by our organisations shows that thousands of protesters opposing the bill for a review of article 37 of the Constitution, have stormed the National Assembly, vandalized and looted its premises, as well as those of Burkina’s Radio-Television (RTB), which can no longer transmit signal.
