Baghdad, 5 April: The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) welcomes an additional contribution from the Republic of Estonia in support of mine action activities in Iraq. The Republic of Estonia has prioritized mine action, including clearance of explosives in areas liberated from ISIL, as essential activities before the rehabilitation and reconstruction work can be carried out and civilians can start to return home safely.

The Foreign Ministry donated €100,000 to the UN Refugee Agency (UNCHR) and another €100,000 to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

“Estonia has always supported and will continue to support those in need in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine,” Foreign Minister Sven Mikser said. The named donations will be used to provide shelter and basic necessities and to fund projects in the field of education, child protection and health care.

The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will allocate 30,000 euros as disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. The island nations that were hardest hit and are in need of humanitarian assistance are Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Foreign Minister Sven Mikser says a number of countries have pledged aid for the island nations. “Estonia is also responding to the plea for assistance to meet basic needs such as availability of clean drinking water or provision of medical care.”

In a meeting with Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino, commander of EUNAVFOR Med, also known as Operation Sophia, Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser was given an overview of the course and results of the EU naval operation launched in the central Mediterranean in June 2015.

Operation Sophia aims to ease the migration crisis and curtail the activities of human smugglers. Compared to the same period the year before, the numbers of new migrants flowing into Italy from Libya have decreased by close to 4,000.

Today, the Government allocated one million euros to provide help in ending the migratory flows from Libya in Italy. The amount was allocated from the Government reserves and will be directed to the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF), and to its North African branch in particular.

In cooperation with Libya, its neighbouring countries, and international organisations, the EUTF provides help to regain control over the EU's external borders, to break the business models of human traffickers, and to avoid the deepening of the humanitarian crisis.

Foreign Ministry allocated 150,000 euros to three Estonian NGOs to alleviate the situation of internal refugees and victims of conflict in Ukraine. The allocation was equally divided between the NGOs Ukrainian Cultural Centre, Estonian Refugee Council and Mondo.

“Continuing warfare in eastern Ukraine that has resulted in more than 9800 deaths and 23,000 victims, is a great concern for us,” Foreign Minister Sven Mikser said. “As a state it is difficult to reach those in need, but here the NGOs play a crucial role in alleviating the situation in Ukraine,” the Minister added.

Allocation is for the NGOs Ukrainian Cultural Centre, Estonian Refugee Council and Mondo, that initiated a charity campaign “For Ukraine” in October 2014.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Estonian Rescue Board assembled an aid shipment of pillows and mattresses to alleviate the refugee situation in Serbia. Trucks with Estonian aid will set out today, on 18 March.

The aid shipment contains 6560 pillows and 740 mattresses worth over 34,000 euros. The Rescue Board will send an Estonian rescue team expert to Serbia who will deliver the aid. The humanitarian mission is financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through development cooperation and humanitarian aid funds.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will allocate 20,000 euros to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in order to mitigate the effects of a natural disaster that hit the island country.

During the first post-disaster phase, the biggest necessities are temporary shelters, food and clean drinking water; the succeeding reconstruction phase may bring about a need for construction materials. Many countries have promised to provide disaster relief to Fiji, Estonia responds to the IFRC’s request to deal with primary aid requirements.
