The past week started off with continued shelling of Gaza by Israel as Hamas and other factions fired rockets into Israel while Egypt was trying to facilitate a ceasefire between the two sides. A series of protests were also held in many cities across the West Bank during the Gaza siege in which some of these protests ended in clashes with Israeli soldiers. Two Palestinians: Hamdi Mohammad Jawwad al-Falah, a 22-year old from Hebron and Rushdi Tamimi, a 33-year old from Nabi Saleh were shot dead by Israeli soldiers who were trying to suppress the protests.

Olive trees carry more than an economic significance in the lives of Palestinians. They are not just like any another trees, they are symbolic of Palestinians’ attachment to their land. Because the trees are draught-resistant and grow under poor soil conditions, they represent Palestinian resistance and resilience. The fact that olive trees live and bear fruit for thousands of years is parallel to Palestinian history and continuity on the land. Palestinians are proud of their olive trees; they take care of them with care and appreciation.

There is an old Arabic barb that pokes fun at men. Of course, it is used mostly by disgruntled women, especially when their husbands cheat on them or break some other sacred pact of marriage. “Trusting men is like water through a sieve.” It rhymes in Arabic but the message is clear. No matter how many promises men may make, never fully trust them. While this may be a bit harsh in terms of the men in our lives, it is certainly applicable to Israel.

Yesterday Palestinians all over the world marked Nakba-day, which commemorates the forced exodus of hundreds of thousands of their kin after the establishment of the Israeli state in 1948. It is a day when Palestinians remember the fatal events 64 years ago and remind each other that they will not give up until Palestine is free.

A rapid escalation of violence between Israel and several armed groups in Gaza has by the end of this week left five people dead and at least 12 injured. On Thursday, December 6, Israeli army air strikes killed two men and wounded two others when they targeted a car on a crowed Gaza street. The Israeli military said the two men had been planning an attack on Israeli civilians and soldiers along Israel’s border with the Sinai Peninsula.
