Joint NGO statement ahead of the European Council of 28-29 June 2016 NGOs strongly condemn new EU policies to contain migration

At the upcoming European Council, European Union (EU) leaders will discuss the European Commission’s Communication on a new Partnership Framework with third countries. The Communication proposes an approach which aims to leverage existing EU and Member States' external cooperation instruments and tools in order to stem migration to Europe.

Tomorrow, 26th June 2012, will see hundreds of organisations all over the world mark the UN International Day in Support of Victims of Torture.

The day also marks the 25th anniversary of the coming into effect of the United Nations Convention against Torture on 26th June 1987.

The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) – the global umbrella body for 150 rehabilitation centres in 74 countries today called for States to sign the new Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (OPCRC) at the official signing ceremony due to take place tomorrow, 28th of February 2012. The measure, the third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, is a last resort for children when their country’s legal system has failed to remedy a violation of their rights.

The results of forensic examinations of Iraqi citizens detained by Danish troops and transferred to Iraqi security forces have revealed that they were tortured.

The forensic examinations were performed in Jordan earlier this month by three clinical experts coordinated by the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT).

Children are torture's hidden victims. They are taken in for petty crimes and forced to confess under torture. Sexually tortured by soldiers as a cheap method of warfare against whole populations. Made to watch their parents undergo torture. Beaten by police for loitering.

The problem is at once pervasive and severely underexposed. The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is working to change that.

Israel's ongoing assault on Gaza is causing widespread mental trauma, especially among children. In parallel, delivery of desperately needed emergency mental health services has ceased.

Since its premises were destroyed by Israeli bombs on 30 December the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP) - a member of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) - has been unable to provide care to an ever increasing number of traumatised civilians.
