Cyclone Nargis struck Burma last Friday with devastating force. According to official government sources, the death toll stands at 22,500 with a further 41,000 missing, nearly all the result of a massive storm surge which swept into the Irrawaddy Delta.

Friday's storm was the worst cyclone to hit Asia since 1991, when 143,000 people died in Bangladesh. Many Burmese are already living in poor conditions and it will be very difficult for them to recover from this crisis without immediate assistance. The most pressing needs are for clean water, food, sanitation and shelter.

Clean water is essential for life, but over a billion people (a sixth of the world's population) do not have access to safe drinking water. It is estimated that a child dies every 15 seconds in developing countries as a result of diseases related to a lack of safe water.

As well as disease and death, a lack of clean water close to people's homes also affects their time, livelihood and quality of life. Women and children especially often spend hours in a daily ritual, walking many miles just to collect water.

There are two huge humanitarian crises looming in Lebanon and Gaza. The fact that the current conflict has seen more children than soldiers killed in Lebanon shows the true horror of this war and the blatant disregard for civilian life. The number of dead, injured and homeless in that country continues to rise daily with no prospect of a lasting peace in sight.
