His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam in a titah consented to the establishment of "The Committee for the Palestinian Humanitarian Fund".

The Myanmar Typhoon Nargis Humanitarian Fund and China's Earthquake Aid Fund has received a contribution amounting to more than $198,000.00. With the recent contribution, the funds so far have collected a total of more than $446,000.00.

Receiving the contributions was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad, as Joint Fund Advisor at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. DST Communication contributed a total of more than $64,100.00 while B-Mobile contributed $18,065.00.

The Humanitarian Relief Fund for cyclone victims in Myanmar and the earthquake in China has received a donation of one hundred thousand dollars from the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation. The donation brings the total amount collected to $264,955.87. It was presented Monday by the Minister of Communications, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abu Bakar who is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation. Under the leadership of China's central government with the considerable assistance from the international community, China has achieved an important victory over the quake-relief. On the 12th of May this year, a strong earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter Scale jolted Southwest China's Sichuan Province. His Majesty's Government had donated 1.1 million US dollars in cash to China's earthquake-hit areas as well as establishing the Humanitarian Relief Fund for the Victims of Cyclone in Myanmar and the Earthquake in China.

Brunei Darussalam is joining the ASEAN Emergency Rapid Assessment Team, ERAT, to assist Myanmar in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis. ERAT is jointly coordinated by the ASEAN Committee and the Government of Myanmar.

Brunei, through the National Disaster Management Centre, will be represented by the Superintendent of Fire and Rescue Services, Awang Janaidi bin Haji Gunong, who received the national flag prior to his departure to Myanmar.

The Chairman of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation's Board of Directors, Pehin Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin says two funds from Brunei Darussalam's citizens and residents totalling nearly 2 million Brunei dollars have helped in rebuilding Aceh that was devastated by the tsunami two years ago. The funds are the Foundation Initiative Fund and the National Tsunami Disaster Victims Aid Fund under the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The Pakistan Earthquake Humanitarian Fund and the Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund have collected more than 570 thousand dollars. Both funds were officially closed Monday by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad who is also the adviser for both funds.

Both funds were handed over the donation from three government departments. The Mosque Affairs Department donated more than 31 thousand 990 dollars to the Pakistan Earthquake Humanitarian Fund and nearly 4 thousand 300 dollars to the Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund.

Pakistan's High Commission in Brunei Darussalam is to establish a Relief Fund for the Earthquake Victims. The President's Earthquake Relief Fund is set up by the Pakistani High Commission to allow members of the public in the country to make contributions. In response to President Pervez Musharraf's appeal for foreign aid, the Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan in Brunei Darussalam, Mr. Syed Abraha Hussain said at the moment the fund is open only for those who wish to contribute.

The Chairman of Board of Directors of the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation, Pehin Dato Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin, gave the assurance upon his return from the Indonesian province Monday afternoon.

In an interview with RTB, Yang Berhormat Pehin said the contributions in the form of foodstuff, clothing and other necessities have been distributed among the survivors through the first phase of Brunei's humanitarian aid.

The Brunei Shell Marketing, donated a sum of 10 thousand dollars. Its Director Pengiran Yasmin bin Pengiran Haji Mohammad said the money is to cover the cost of fuel of RBA's aircraft to transport contributions from people in this country to the affected areas.

The foundation also received a sum of 3 thousand 500 dollars from the Women's Institute.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports said financial aid and rebuilding of schools and homes for the survivors of the tsunami disaster in Aceh are badly needed at the moment. Awang Jemat Ampal, who returned from Medan last Saturday, spoke to RTB and said that financial aid is more appropriate because it can be used to purchase all the necessities they required at a cheaper price, including stationary and books for children.

The money could also be used in the reconstruction of schools and houses.

Brunei Darussalam's efforts to provide humanitarian relief assistance to Tsunami victims in Indonesia's northern city of Banda Aceh is gathering pace with the expected departure Wednesday of a team to help in the relief work.
