General

President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom briefed his cabinet following his recent visit to New York to attend the United Nations High-Level Plenary Meeting of the 60th Session of the General Assembly. While in New York he discussed the Millennium Development Goals and highlighted the importance of receiving urgent financial assistance towards the national recovery effort.

Information

On September 8 and 9 UNICEF representatives attended UNICEF's Global Tsunami Validation workshop in Colombo. This was to validate the findings of the regional office assessment team who had conducted a rapid assessment of the first 100 days of UNICEF's tsunami response. The workshop developed recommendations for future implementation of emergency response.

Information

In cooperation with Television Maldives, UNICEF and The IFRC assisted in the production of a television documentary on the post tsunami water and sanitation situation in the Maldives, which showed how the government and international community are contributing to the recovery effort.

1. Health

Six months of medical consumables and supplies for all atoll regional hospitals, health posts and clinics have been ordered. Laboratory equipment for water quality and food safety testing will arrive soon.

The first workshop to prepare health workers for the November measles-rubella vaccination campaign was conducted this week. The workshop discussed new methods, latest information and health research.

Update

The American Ambassador to Maldives based in Sri Lanka has visited the Maldives and held discussions with the National Disaster Management Centre to determine the areas where assistance could be considered to include the Maldives in a regional approach programme.

Current visits: Ms. Cecilia Lotse, UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia, is on mission in the Maldives from 12-15 March to review the progress and challenges of work conducted by the UNICEF-Maldives team in cooperation with the Government authorities, UNCT agencies and other programme partners.

Mr. Bilaal Rajan, UNICEF Canada's Child Ambassador who helped raise over Can.$ 2 milllion is on a 3-day visit to Maldives to witness personally activities undertaken with funding raised.

I. SITUATION

Water shortages are being experienced by Thaa Atoll Buruni following the breakdown of its water production plant. The island office says that the plant which was producing 500 litres of water daily broke down on Friday 27th of February. Bottled water is being brought in until repair is completed. The island office said that they have started using chlorinated well water for household needs despite some areas on the island still showing signs of saltwater contamination in the fresh water lens.

Upcoming visit(s): Ms. Margareta Wahlstrom, Regional Coordinator, is expected to arrive in Male' on 12 March for a one-day visit to Maldives. The Internal Displacement Division (IDD) Team, led by Mr. Mark Cutts, and assisted by a Consultant, Mr. Scott Leckie, is due to travel to Maldives on Monday, 28 February, for a one week mission (for more details, pls. refer to sitrep #29).
