Why this bulletin?

Winter storm, Alexa, which is considered to be one of the strongest storms in decades, hit the occupied Palestinian territories on December 11 until December 14. Its wind velocity exceeded 80 km/hr. it was also featured with a prolific snowfall that reached more than two meters in some areas. Rain intensity has reached 27 centimeters, along with exceptional low temperatures. Water has flooded low areas in various parts of Gaza, which led 10,000 to evacuate their homes temporarily, as well as damages that affected 21,000 houses.

Disasters represent a major humanitarian concern with increasing regularity and intensity due to climate change. Children are one of the most vulnerable groups during a disaster and new challenges arise for at-risk countries to guarantee children their inalienable rights. Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Philippines has again brought these challenges into focus.

Since the current crisis began in December 2013:

  • 1,188 schools in the three most affected States (Jonglei, Unity, Upper Nile) have closed.

  • Nearly half a million children and adolescents need education interventions due to the current crisis.

  • Over 9,000 children have been recruited into armed forces and groups since January 2014.

This report presents a snapshot of the education response to the Syrian crisis. The report provides an overview of the context, key issues, services offered and barriers to education service delivery in Syria proper as well as in Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Northern Iraq/Kurdistan and Egypt. The data presented in this report are based on a survey of the INEE members and partners, and information shared by members of the INEE Working Group on Minimum Standards and the INEE Steering Group. An interview with Simon Purnell, ZOA, Thailand

In the second portion of this interview, Mr. Purnell highlights how the INEE Minimum Standards have guided ZOA’s work to secure funding, train and coordinate actors in the camps and create a standardized framework for the new consortium as ZOA transitions out of Thailand in 2014.
