It is ten months since the earthquake devastated Haiti, killing over 230,000 people and affecting millions. Despite the huge amounts of money pledged by Governments and raised by agencies the pace of change is frustratingly slow. But WER has been delivering real progress in Cité Soleil, the poorest slum in Haiti, through our local partner the Good Samaritan Foundation.

Following a recent visit to Haiti, WER Programme Manager Jeremy Horner, is very pleased with what he saw.

In the slum area of Cité Soleil, Haiti many children are malnourished and underweight. Despite the massive aid operation not enough food is reaching those most in need. WER partner, the Good Samaritan Foundation has begun a supplementary feeding programme for over 252 'at risk' children that will ensure that they achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Malnourishment can lead to serious, lifelong health problems, even death.

On Friday World Emergency Relief (WER) received news that another village in Eastern Congo has been destroyed due to the ongoing conflict between the FDLR (Interhamwe rebels) and government forces. The village of Rubuga was home to 104 families whose houses have been burnt down and crops destroyed or stolen. These families have now fled to Marungu where ARM Congo, a WER partner, is providing emergency food and shelter.

At present, ARM Congo is the only NGO on the ground providing support for the many displaced people in that region of the High Plateau.

At 4.53pm local time yesterday Haiti was hit by a massive earthquake. The worst affected areas are the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the surrounding slums of Cite Soleil.

Hundreds are feared dead already. Many hundreds more will die unless we respond immediately. Please donate as much as you can now so that WER can immediately ship medicines, food, blankets and other emergency supplies.

WER Chief Executive, Alex Haxton, recently visited Cite Soleil. Even at the best of times, living conditions there are appalling.
