Every year, between June and September, flooding and landslide in the Terai and Hills respectively warrants increased preparedness by the Government and the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT). Beginning in the second week of August 2017, Nepal experienced a period of sustained, heavy rainfall resulting in widespread flooding across 35 of the country’s 75 districts. Several districts recorded the heaviest rainfall in 60 years, and over 80 percent of land in the southern Terai region was inundated by flood waters.

In March 2017, the Inter-Agency Common Feedback Project (CFP) collected feedback from 2100 respondents, randomly selected from across the 14 priority earthquake affected districts on reconstruction issues. This quantitative research is further supplemented and triangulated through focus group discussions held in Gorkha, Dolakha and Ramechhap, as well as feedback submitted by partner agencies from their own beneficiaries.

KEY FINDINGS

Between March 14-24 the Common Feedback Project (CFP) deployed enumerators through its partner organisation Nepal Development Research Institute (NDRI) to collect community perception surveys on the theme of food security and livelihoods.

This report is the result of 2100 surveys completed in randomly selected households throughout the 14 priority affected districts, as well as one focus group discussion and feedback aggregated from four partner organisations.

The report reflects an overall increase in respondents' perceptions of tension, violence, mistreatment and exclusion over the past six months, with 40 percent of respondents reporting that they feel someone in their community is being excluded or discriminated against in reconstruction support -- up from 13 percent in August 2016.

UNESCO has commissioned post-disaster rescue excavations at earthquake-damaged monuments within the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, continuing a mission initiated last year aimed at restoring Nepal’s cultural heritage. UNESCO, together with a team of international and national experts from the Department of Archaeology, Government of Nepal, and Durham University, UK, is undertaking excavations at the Jagannath and Gopinath Temples in Hanumandhoka Durbar Square, to provide a better understanding of their history and the condition of their foundations.

KEY FINDINGS

As early as July 2015 concerns over access to water began to be heard from earthquake affected communities. The first issue of Open Mic Nepal highlighted comments from Gorkha and Dhading that water sources had dried up. Over time the Common Feedback Project registered more and more feedback over water supply from all of the 14 priority affected districts.
