June 28, 2016 — On Saturday, April 16, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the northwestern coast of Ecuador, killing hundreds and injuring thousands. The quake–the worst to hit the country since 1987–leveled buildings, destroyed roads and bridges, damaged structures and triggered landslides. Reports estimate that upwards of 73,000 people were displaced while more than 7,000 buildings–560 of which were schools–were either damaged or destroyed.

During the east African famine of 1984-85 we flew the very first 747 cargo jet ever to land at Addis Ababa’s airport, thereby doubling its capacity to receive emergency aid. Our 120-ton shipment of emergency supplies was matched by a second flight we arranged for USA For Africa, the music industry’s response to the crisis, in mid-1985.

Massive aftershocks continued throughout the month, furthering damage and making relief and recovery efforts difficult.

The remote village of Fyakse, in the Dhading district of Nepal, was hit hard by the two major earthquakes which struck the country in April and May. OpUSA staff visited the village in July of this year, and we have since decided to focus our relief and long-term recovery efforts in the area. As educational recovery has been deemed a top priority, Operation USA will work with villagers and partners to rebuild a school and assist in re-establishing educational programs.

Operation USA has confirmed it will make an emergency cash grant (via partner organization Brother’s Brother Foundation) to Himalayan Healthcare to aid in earthquake recovery. The major grant will fund the local purchase of medical supplies for health facilities damaged in last weekend’s magnitude 7.8 quake.

On Saturday April 25, 2015 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Nepal. The tremor was followed by several aftershocks registering as high as magnitude 6.7, and additional aftershocks are still expected this week.

The earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday, April 25, 2015 was the worst to hit Nepal in 80 years. The quake hit Nepal’s heavily populated capital, Kathmandu, and impacted areas of India, Bangladesh, Tibet and China. As of Monday, more than 4,000 deaths have been confirmed, with millions more people injured, displaced and facing total devastation of their homes and communities. The death toll is expected to climb even further, and while early reports emerging from the country have shown massive destruction, the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

While Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas took direct hits from the storm, the majority of deaths and most extensive damage was in impoverished Haiti, where it has rained almost non-stop since Tuesday. The storm hit eastern Cuba as a Category 2 hurricane early Thursday. The storm is on course to hit large parts of Eastern United States next week.

The quake was the largest earthquake in the region in 50 years—and also affected Panama and Nicaragua. The quake was centered 38 miles off the coastal resort town of Liberia and was 25 miles underground. A tsunami warning was sounded but no apparent tsunami occurred.

The hurricane caused widespread flooding and at least 3 deaths to the island nation which is still working to recover from the devastating earthquake that hit in 2010—and the world's largest cholera epidemic in this century affecting 600,000 people.
