On August 21, 2009, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development received a new $275,000 grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to provide life-saving assistance to malnourished children in Kenya.

Mercy-USA and the Kenyan Ministry of Health (MoH) - with the support of USAID, as well as earlier grants from UNICEF and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) - are setting up eleven sites in the Kajiado District of Kenya to treat malnourished children under five years of age, as well as pregnant women and nursing mothers.

On October 8, 2005, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the northern part of Pakistan destroying villages and towns, killing over 75,000 people, and leaving several million persons homeless.

From May 2009 to March 2010, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development and our local partner Humanity Hope (HH) are building a new $300,000 high school for 650 boys in the village of Shamdhara in the Northwest Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan. Since the original high school was destroyed in the devastating October 2005 earthquake, the boys have been studying in tents set up on the site.

From November 17 to November 19, 2008, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development's Disaster Response Team distributed food packages and household kits

to over 4,600 persons left homeless by severe flash floods in the Hadramout Region of Yemen.

The team distributed food packages and household kits to 325 displaced families (over 1,900 persons) in the towns of Broum, Sheher and Tiwila, as well as to

families housed in the Siddiq School in the city of Al-Mukalla.

Severe flash floods in the Hadramout and Al-Mahrah regions of Yemen have killed about 100 persons and left approximately 15,000 others homeless.

Mercy-USA for Aid and Development is sending a Disaster Response Team to the affected areas. This team will assess the needs and recommend the most appropriate way to respond.

Background

Severe flooding in the summer of 2007 displaced about 9 million people throughout Bangladesh. Approximately 1,000 persons, many of them children, drowned or died from waterborne illnesses.

Mercy-USA's Response

From November 2007 to February 2008, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development, through our local partner Assistance for Humanitarian Development (AHD), is helping 285 families (about 1,800 persons) severely affected by these floods to rebuild their lives.

Background

Cyclone Sidr struck Bangladesh on November 15 with winds in excess of 150 miles per hour and a 16-foot tidal surge. This devastating storm, the worst to strike Bangladesh since 1991, has killed at least 3,500 people and left about three million others homeless.

"The extent of destruction is unimaginable. In the 7 kilometers (4.5 miles) I trekked this morning, I saw not a single house standing," reported an eyewitness from a coastal village. "Only a few leafless trees and a couple of dogs reminded me it was once a village."

Background

Since fighting began on May 20 in the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian Refugee Camp in northern Lebanon, approximately 30,000 of the camp's residents have become homeless.

UNICEF estimates that about 15,000 of those displaced are children.

During the week of March 11, 2007, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development's office in Lebanon distributed heating oil to 55 schools in the Bekaa Valley (Hermel and Baalbek) and in Kfar Gooz in the south. Over 15,000 children now have warm classrooms in which to learn and develop.

The magnitude-6.4 and 6.3 quakes, which struck around 11 a.m. local time near the city of Padang on western Sumatra, have left over 135,000 persons homeless.

"This time, it was not only very strong but also lasted a long time," said 75-year-old Nurbari, a grandmother sitting under a large plastic sheet strung between trees in front of her house.
