WASHINGTON, D.C. - Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation's (VVAF) Information Management and Mine Action Programs (iMMAP) will soon be deploying a specialist to Lebanon to provide emergency relief services as conflict surmounts. The United Nations Joint Logistics Center (UNJLC) and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) have asked for iMMAPs immediate assistance in emergency information management services overseas as the agency plans relief operations.

Iraq Landmine Survey Suspended Due to Near-Death Explosion

Iraq. Sudan. The Democratic Republic of Congo. Afghanistan. In 2006 VVAF's Information Management and Mine Action Programs (iMMAP) staff are active in some of the most dangerous places in the world, overcoming setbacks to carry out their critical humanitarian work.

As the violence continues, political instability increases, and the risks of working in these environments heighten. Nevertheless, iMMAP continues involvement in dangerous areas.

A VVAF Iraq Landmine Impact Survey Team Leader suffered second-degree burns from an explosion Sunday in northern Iraq. While traveling in a taxi, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated nearby, severely injuring this VVAF team member and one of his medical colleagues.

Washington, D.C., May 2, 2006 -- The Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation's (VVAF) Information Management & Mine Action Programs (iMMAP) will begin providing humanitarian technical assistance to the United Nations Mine Action Centre for Afghanistan (UNMACA) this month, in Kabul, Afghanistan. This project is funded by the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).

UNMACA centrally manages and coordinates funding, field staff, mine detecting dog training, technical assistance, and quality assurance activities in support of all mine action activities in Afghanistan.
