Security incident information management is a key part of an organisation’s broader security risk management, which aims to support organisational security in order to ultimately improve access to populations in need.
RedR UK’s recent use of simulation in its training has demonstrated that there is a strong argument for the value of this methodology. A new learning paper aims to outline the benefits.
Omar Mahammad is Community Mobilisation Coordinator with the NGO International Relief and Development (IRD) in Za’atari camp, Jordan - home to more than 80,000 Syrian refugees. For the past six months, a wide range of actors have been working to develop the Sudan National Sanitation and Hygiene Strategic Framework, which will help to speed and scale up efforts to improve sanitation and hygiene services and practices across the country. On the 12-14 January 2016, RedR held a pilot of the Shelter in Urban Emergencies course, delivered as part of RedR’s ‘Ready to Respond’ programme, funded by Lloyd’s Charities Trust. RedR is responding to the devastation wreaked upon Vanuatu by cyclone Pam, sending experts on food, shelter, water, and child protection.
The category five storm, which ripped through the island nation on 13th-14th March, has been described as a ‘monster that has hit Vanuatu,’ by the Pacific nation state’s president, Baldwin Lonsdale.
He added: ‘All the development which has taken place (here) has been wiped out.’
This paper has been commissioned by RedR to identify gaps in skills, technology, and knowledge in urban humanitarian response in order to inform RedR’s project Ready to Respond which is looking to address these gaps in two specific areas:
On Saturday 6th December, the first RedR UK-trained NHS staff left the UK to help the fight against Ebola.
The 26 Doctors, nurses and paramedics, who have volunteered to live and work in Sierra Leone spent a week learning humanitarian skills including safety and security, and psychological support.
‘I carried my nephews through the surges the typhoon caused. I was a council worker, but I found myself up to my neck in water, with two boys raised above my head to keep them safe.’ Kenneth Renera was one of the estimated 11 million people caught in and affected by Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines on November 8-9 2013.
Today, thanks in part to RedR UK, he is one of millions of Philippines nationals working to ensure he, his community, and his country recover, and are better protected in future.
The ongoing conflict in northern Kenya and Somalia has seen the region become increasingly unstable. KIRA, an ongoing programme led by RedR and UNOCHA, ran an orientation session in the region last month to engage with local stakeholders from the affected communities.
