One group of students in the classroom is already finishing written term exams, which check their knowledge of the past term. The last exam in November was written in the shade of trees in the school quad because classrooms were destroyed or occupied by IDP's. The last child handed in his exam form to his teacher impatiently because he wanted to go enjoy the ceremony with the rest of the students.
"The doll called Papule (little big mouth in Czech) is my favorite of all toys here." says the four year old Pasuna, whose hair is pitch black, while clutching a blond doll in her arms. About fifty other three- to five-year-olds are sat around colorful round tables. We are in a brand new nursery in the city of Trincomalee on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka.
The construction of the new nursery was finished at the end of December by People in Need, which is building six and reconstructing two other nurseries in the region. All of the original nurseries were swept by tsunami.
Sixteen year old Fatima runs in front of a drenched tent screaming her favorite "How are you?" She repeats this little ritual of hers over and over every time when foreigners come to the camp, where she lives. Fatima's English is very good and she never misses a chance to practice it. For a long time after the earthquake she would not be able to speak at all. A long time passed before she got over the loss of her family, her father in particular.

Around the heavy machine stand about ten children from neighboring houses and watch the metal monster's work with curiosity.
