Kuala Lumpur, 14th July 2017 – On 6th July 2017, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in the island of Leyte in the Philippines, causing major damages in Barangays of Ormoc City particularly upland Barangays including six upland Barangays namely Tongonan, Cabaon-an, Milagro, Lake Danao, Cabintan and Gaas. Over 700 aftershocks have been recorded (ranging from magnitude 1.5 to 5.8), including a major aftershock measuring 5.8 magnitude (previously pegged at 5.4) on the 10th of July, in the days that followed.

On 11 December 2016, for the first time in 2 years, MERCY Malaysia entered Gaza through the Rafah border crossing in Egypt to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gazan people. This mission marks the first humanitarian mission allowed to enter through the Rafah border since the border crossing was permanently closed in 2014.

MERCY Malaysia’s emergency response phase is expected to last 4 weeks. In alignment with MERCY Malaysia’s Total Disaster Risk Management (TDRM) approach to natural disasters, it is essential that our operations carry on to the Recovery and Rehabilitation phase, followed by the Prevention and Mitigation, and Preparedness phase. This holistic approach ensures that we meet the needs of the affected communities and identify the underlying factors of disaster risks that can be reduced in the event of another natural disaster.

On June 5th 2015 a 5.9 magnitude earthquake, with a depth of 10 km, occurred in Ranau town, Sabah State at 07:15 local time. According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MMD), the tremor was felt in several areas throughout Sabah State. Ranau and Kota Kinabalu reported damages to houses and infrastructure.

Kuala Lumpur, 29th May 2015 – MERCY Malaysia has continued with operations at the Belantik Dentention Centre in Kedah for the second week. The medical team has continued providing medical aid, distribution of specific non-food items and psychosocial support.

MERCY Malaysia has also been working with the Royal Malaysian Navy and has a team on standby to assist Rohingya asylum seekers and Bangladeshi irregular migrants on boats at sea. However, at the present time there have been no boats detected within Malaysian territorial waters.
