Yesterday the World Health Organization’s Executive Board convened for a special meeting to review the current state of the Ebola response and how, together, we can end this outbreak. The key message across the board was that we must all stay engaged and avoid complacency. While collective efforts have started to yield an encouraging drop in cases in all three of the most affected countries, it is critical that we maintain focus as we enter the next phase of the response.

Measles – Rubella campaigns will reduce child mortality, birth defects

DHAKA, Bangladesh, 17 November 2011 - Today the Measles Initiative applauds the GAVI Alliance board decision to fund rubella campaigns in the countries with the greatest need. The decision will result in the introduction of a combined Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccine in many more countries. This will save lives, protect hundreds of thousands of children against birth defects and help to eliminate measles and rubella from the world.

Washington, D.C. — September 28, 2011

The United Nations Foundation today announced that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had delivered $15 million of its $30 million commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). Half the funds will be used in 2011 by UNICEF for vaccines and by the World Health Organization (WHO) to support campaign operations. The remaining funds will be released in 2012 to support both agencies. Countries benefiting from the funds include several members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation countries, such as Yemen, Somalia and Sudan.
