The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) represent an unprecedented global consensus about measures to reduce poverty. The eight goals address targets to increase incomes; reduce hunger; achieve universal primary education; eliminate gender inequality; reduce maternal and child mortality; reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria; reverse the loss of natural resources and biodiversity; improve access to water, sanitation, and good housing; and establish eff ective global partnerships.

Rape during wartime greatly increases an individual's risk of contracting HIV, according to predictions comparing conflict and non-conflict settings. Dr Anna Foss, of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), explained the estimates and their underlying assumptions at a seminar on 4 December.

Development experts delivered a mixed verdict on the validity and progress of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and suggested further action at a stimulating conference organised by LIDC. They explored how to combine their diverse academic disciplines in new ways to help achieve a more integrated approach to the global development framework. The event held at Birkbeck on 5 November was a timely assessment of the MDGs at the mid-point towards their target date of 2015.
