The situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate as all Plan Program Unites are now affected by the rising flood waters. No longer confined to the Kassala and River Atbara areas, Guli, Ed Duweim and North Kordafan are now reporting on damage to, or isolation of, their communities due to additional flooding. Kassala and River Atbara remain the most seriously affected.

Plan is working in 28 villages in the rural areas of River Atbara in Kassala state. Some of these villages have been subjected to heavy flooding as a result of additional heavy rains.

More than 300,000 people have been left homeless as a result of the devastating floods in Kassala, Sudan and the surrounding locale. As the most active nongovernmental organization in the area, Plan is a member of the State Emergency Committee, which is assessing the situation and delivering food, drinking water and medication to those most in need.

Plan Sierra Leone was first established in 1976 in Makeni, Bombali district. Within a period of 20 years Plan was managing a caseload of about 29,500 sponsored children in Bombali district, Moyamba district, Rural and Urban Western Area. By 1997, the civil conflict in Sierra Leone had spread to every district of the country with the rebel forces controlling almost 85% of the countryside. That same year, rebels invaded the capital city Freetown for the first time and took the powers of governance of the state onto themselves.

On July 28 and 29, heavy rains fell in Kassala, The next day, the Mad River - Gash, overflowing with the recent rainwater, burst through its embankment, flooding village streets. Many homes were completely damaged by the floods while access to others was blocked off by the rushing waters.

Kenya was recently hit with two weeks of heavy rains that washed out roads and bridges and submerged entire villages. The resulting floods killed at least 30 people and displaced thousands from their homes.
No Plan families were endangered by the recent floods. Our field staff contacted families in the Nyanza area of Kenya, one of the worst affected parts of the country, and they report that no one has been affected.
