The people of the Sudan’s Darfur Region have experienced numerous shocks of various types over the past 15 years. This report describes exactly how shocks have affected specific livelihood groups in Darfur, the extent to which people have been successful at recovering their self-sufficiency, and why. We found that households make calculated decisions based on balancing the potential risks and returns of activities in light of shocks. We found that some key factors influencing resilience and recovery in this context include:

The new building replaces one of three NCB school buildings that were destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 2010 in Haiti.

  • In February 2016, HAC commissioner in Ed Deain informed the humanitarian community of the arrival of South Sudanese (SS) in Khor Omer IDP camp in Ed Deain. The arrivals of SS were reported in March 2016 by HAC and SRCS in the different localities of East Darfur State. Due to inaccessibility to these areas, the humanitarian assessment was delayed until 10-11 May 2016.

Sumbawa Island is in the West Nusa Province, home to Mount Tambora, a volcano that produced the largest eruption recorded in human history. June 30, 2015—Women of Sana-anlo in Odisha, India, joined with the youths of their village in an unprecedented effort to make their entire community less vulnerable to the hazards, including cyclones and floods, that regularly impact this region.

The effort came on the heels of a training in disaster risk reduction that two youths of Sana-anlo, along with youths from other villages, were selected to attend. Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) in partnership with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) conducted the training.

June 9, 2015—About six weeks after Nepal’s massive earthquake and subsequent tremors, landslides, and avalanches killed nearly 9,000 people and destroyed half a million homes, the country’s battered communities are determined to remake their lives.

And the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), is supporting those efforts by providing clean water, food, emergency shelter, hygiene kits, school kits, and other necessities.

May 7, 2015—Haiti could soon have a new, strong set of grassroots women entrepreneurs, thanks to Prosperity Catalyst, a nonprofit with the mission of launching and fostering independent, women-led businesses in distressed countries.
