On-the-ground innovative efforts to be supported in 18 countries by the multilateral Fund

United Nations, New York - The United Nations Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) today announced US$10 million in grants to 13 initiatives in 18 countries. The grants complete the UN Trust Fund's 14th grant-making cycle of 2009, delivering a total of US$20.5 million for 26 projects in 33 countries and territories.

Monrovia - The President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, presided over the launch of the Liberia Women Democracy Radio in Monrovia on 5 August - the country's first radio station that is dedicated to raising the voices of women and increasing women's access to information. The radio station also seeks to highlight gender issues and to provide practical training and exposure to female journalists.

The Liberia Women Democracy Radio is sponsored by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF).

The massive earthquake of January 2010 in Haiti is estimated to have left more than 200,000 people dead and 1.5 million homeless. The most affected cities are Port-au-Prince, Leogane, Petit Goave and Jacmel, which are characterized by widespread destruction of infrastructure and disruption of even the basic services, such as shelters, electricity, water, transport and health and security services.

Women have been particularly affected by the disaster.

Local to national efforts to be supported in 13 countries by the Fund

United Nations, New York - The Fund for Gender Equality today announced grants totalling more than US$27.5 million to recipients in 13 countries, with grant amounts of up to US$3 million each. The Fund for Gender Equality, supported by donations from the Governments of Spain and Norway, is managed by the UN Development Fund for Women, UNIFEM (part of UN Women). The grants fall under the Fund's Implementation Grant category, which aims to fast track action on national laws and policies to advance gender equality.

Purpose

This guidebook aims to provide actors in Gaza with guidance on gender analysis, planning and actions to ensure that the needs, contributions and capacities of women, girls, boys and men are considered in all aspects of humanitarian response. It also offers checklists to assist in monitoring gender equality programming. The guidelines focus on major cross-cutting issues and areas of work in the early response phase of emergencies. The guidebook is also a useful tool to make sure gender issues are included in needs assessments, contingency planning and evaluations.

This October we will mark the tenth anniversary of the Security Council's groundbreaking resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, which called for higher levels of women's involvement in peacemaking and peacebuilding. This anniversary is an opportunity to reaffirm the core message of that landmark text: sustainable peace is possible only with women's full participation - their perspectives, their leadership, their daily, equal presence wherever we seek to make and keep the peace.

Progress has indeed been achieved.
