INTRODUCTION

The National Nutrition Surveillance System (NNSS) was incorporated into Palestinian Authority health planning in 2006.

Nutrition assessments at that time showed worrying deteriorations in important indicators and it was decided that a more systematic approach was needed to monitor health trends in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The Socio-Economic and Food Security (SEFSec) survey is part of a broader monitoring system in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt) that is led by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS). The purpose of the SEFSec is to identify changes in the living conditions of Palestinian households by annually monitoring key socio-economic and food security indicators. The SEFSec addresses a need for annual monitoring information to complement the less frequent but more detailed Palestinian Expenditure and Consumption Survey (PECS).

On Saturday 27 March, the Palestinian Authority and the European Union are launching the payment of social allowances to over 51,800 poor and vulnerable Palestinian families in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. These allowances, paid every three months, are targeted towards families in need. The programme's partner banks, Bank of Palestine and Cairo Amman Bank, will exceptionally open on Saturday 27 March to allow beneficiaries to collect their allowances.

SUMMARY

Israel has imposed restrictions on the movement of people and goods at Gaza's border crossings since June 2007 and further reduced supplies of fuel and electricity to the Gaza Strip in September 2007. This has had a severe impact on water and sanitation services in Gaza, the breakdown of which is placing public health and the wider environment at risk, both in Gaza and Israel.

Gaza's border crossings should be opened, immediately, so that construction materials and aid necessary to respond to the water and sanitation crisis in the Gaza Strip, can enter.
