The attack apparently targeted a convoy carrying an international delegation.

Mogadishu, 03 April 2013 – The United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Zainab Hawa Bangura, arrived in Mogadishu to raise awareness and discuss ways of addressing sexual violence in Somalia.

SRSG Bangura met with UN officials, civil society partners and a range of stakeholders to listen and learn about the challenges faced in tackling sexual violence. SRSG Bangura’s first trip to Somalia is intended to focus on information gathering to help inform future conversations with the government.

Mogadishu, 25 March 2013 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga is shocked and saddened by the killing of Rahma Abdulkadir, a media worker with Abduwaq radio.

Unknown attackers reportedly armed with pistols shot and killed Ms. Abdulkadir in Yaqshid district, Mogadishu last night.

“I condemn this hideous attack in the strongest terms and send my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Rahma Abdulkadir” SRSG Mahiga said.

Mogadishu, 18 March 2013 - The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, Dr. Augustine P. Mahiga, is shocked and saddened by today’s car bombing which occurred near Villa Somalia in the vicinity of the National Theatre in Mogadishu.

Initial reports indicate that at least seven people were killed and many more wounded by a vehicle borne improvised explosive device. There are also reports that a senior Somali security official may have been targeted in the attack.

Mogadishu, 01 February 2013 – The UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) notes that charges have been filed against five individuals in the case opened by the Somali National Police investigating the publication in the media of an allegedly fabricated report on sexual violence in Mogadishu. A journalist, Abdiaziz Abdinur Ibrahim, was charged under Article 269 of the Somali penal code for offending the honour of a state institution and for filing a false report.

The ending of impunity in Somalia particularly that related to the killing of journalist is a human rights priority, the UN special representative for Somalia Augustine Mahiga has told Bar-kulan as the world marks the international day to end impunity.

In response to emailed questions by Bar-kulan regarding the role of UNPOS in ending impunity in Somalia, Mahiga emphasized the need for law enforcement to investigate each killing, apprehend suspects and follow due process to ensure that culprits are brought to justice.

Over the past few weeks the people of Somalia’s southern port city of Kismayo have witnessed the story of profound transformation, following the capture of the local seaport, airport and other key installations by the Somali National Army with support from AMISOM troops.

A former stronghold of the extremist insurgents, Kismayo has for years been robbed of its potential wealth to fund Al-Shabaab, but the new reality means that people in the city have a chance to start re-building Kismayo into a prosperous place once again.

Captain Asha is passionate about promoting equal opportunities. “Women should get the same opportunities in training and career development as our men colleagues,” she said.
