Question: Humanitarian space is important and endangered. OCHA has a role in monitoring and mapping access constraints, so I’m curious to hear how you see the restrictions humanitarians are facing regarding humanitarian access. And to understand how warfare is changing and whether that has implications for the challenges you are seeing.

This year marks the seventieth anniversary of the Geneva Conventions, a cornerstone of international humanitarian law. It is with great pleasure that I am here today representing the United Nations to join you in marking this important milestone.

This event gives us an important opportunity to recall the remarkable scope and impact of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. It also gives us a chance to reflect on the challenges we face in ensuring compliance to international humanitarian law, and to identify good practices that we can all advocate for.

Thank you, Madam President.

Every month in Yemen, some 250 humanitarian partners work with the United Nations to assist more than 13 million people in the country. We are delivering the world’s largest humanitarian operation in an extremely challenging environment, one in which things relentlessly seem to be getting worse.

I will also give an outlook for the coming weeks.

Thank you, Madam President.

Events in Yemen over the past several weeks have shown – yet again – just how volatile and devastating this war is. Its impact is seen most clearly in the suffering and injustice inflicted on millions of civilians.

For months, we have advocated progress on five key priorities to reduce the suffering in Yemen.
The Security Council endorsed these priorities in your resolution 2451.
