- Background

Fighting in Tabit, North Darfur, in the last week of January has reportedly affected eight other villages, including Tukumare, Kuto, Konjara Tarni and Tangarara and caused thousands of people to flee these areas. Many IDPs are reported to be heading towards Tawila, Shangil Tobai and Zam Zam camps. To date, 25 newly displaced households have been reported in these three locations (Tawila -11, Shangil Tobai - 4, Zam Zam -10); however these numbers are expected to increase in the coming weeks.

- Background

Armed clashes took place between GoS and SLM forces during December in Khor Abeche in South Darfur, and also in Dar El Salam and Shangil Tobai in North Darfur. The fighting caused displacements to Shangil Tobai, Zam Zam, and Dar El Salam and Tangarara during the second half of December and are continuing in January. Assessments have taken place, but exact numbers are not confirmed.

Intense fighting in the East Jebel Mara (EJM) area in early February 2010 caused displacements of populations to North Darfur.

With the security situation stabilising in Shangil Tobai, DDA (Oxfam's partner) and MSF (Spain) were able to conduct head counts in three camps around Shangil Tobai. They report the following numbers of newly displaced households: 917 in Shangil Tobai (Nivasha) camp; 518 in Shadad camp and 645 in Um Dreisai. IOM is planning to verify these 2,080 newly displaced households in the coming week and advise the requirements for NFI/ES.

Armed clashes in Khor Abeche in South Darfur, and also in Dar El Salam and Shangil Tobai in North Darfur, (mid to late December), caused many people to flee their homes. Exact numbers of displaced households arriving in Zam Zam, Dar El Salam and Shangil Tobai have not been confirmed. During the past week, a total of 1,955 displaced households were reported: 1278 in Dar El Salam, 536 in Shangil Tobai and 141 in Zam Zam camp. None have yet been verified by IOM.

Five households were reported to have moved from Shangil Tobai to Tangarara in the El Fasher rural area.

Continued movement of displaced households to and from Tawila and Tabarat, had made verification of remaining households in Tawila difficult.

Executive Summary

- In December, 58,268 households were supported with non-food items and emergency shelter from the NFI Common Pipeline in Darfur.

- The NFI Common Pipeline core partners for transport and procurement, IOM and UNICEF, received CHF Emergency Reserve funding of $350,000 and $800,000 respectively. This has been of particular significance in the case of IOM as it allowed resumption of the winter season transportation activities of the CP, stalled since the end of October.

- Background

Some 4,500 newly displaced households are reported to have arrived on 14 December 2010 to Shangil Tobai camp, Shadad camp and areas east of Shangil Tobai and north of the UNAMID team site: most of whom are reported to be in need of shelter and NFIs.

Most of the 729 previously displaced households from Tabarat village to Tawila are reported to have returned to their places of origin.

During the week under review, there are no new displacements reported.

South Darfur

- Background:

Heavy fighting has taken place in the East Jebel Mara (EJM) area since early February and is ongoing. The Humanitarian Country Team and UNAMID are monitoring the situation and working to gain access for agencies to assess the humanitarian situation.

Pro-Doha and Anti-Doha clashes within Kalma camp during the month of August have increased tensions within the camp.
