OFID – the OPEC Fund for International Development – has signed a US$1 million grant agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) for an initiative aimed at eliminating neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in seven African countries. The agreement was signed by Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa, and Suleiman J Al-Herbish, OFID Director-General.

OFID Director-General Suleiman J Al-Herbish has concluded a high-level mission to Amman, Jordan, where he reaffirmed OFID’s commitment to Palestine through the signing of 10 grant agreements totaling nearly US$16.4 million. The funds will support a range of projects and programs aimed at bolstering the resilience and living standards of the Palestinian people.

Amman, Jordan, 01 April 2018 – The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and UNDP’s Programme of Assistance to the Palestinian People (UNDP/PAPP) signed agreements worth USD 1.16 million to implement projects in support of the resilience of Palestinians residing in East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip. The new agreements aim at providing a sustainable source of drinking water to schools and university students in the Gaza Strip as well as increasing access to healthcare services for cancer patients in East Jerusalem and the visually impaired in the Gaza Strip.

A new report, Wastewater: The reuse opportunity, published today by the International Water Association and OFID (the OPEC Fund for International Development), argues that decisive, urgent and large-scale action is needed to dramatically increase wastewater treatment, reuse and recycling. The report states that cities, as drivers of the global economy, must lead this resource revolution to enable a transition to a circular economy.

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has made a commitment of US$1 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which will support the UNRWA education program in East Jerusalem. OFID’s Director-General Suleiman J. Al-Herbish and UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl signed the agreement today in Amman, Jordan.

OFID Quarterly examines the wellbeing, safety of children across the world

Vienna, Austria, August 2, 2017. “I like schnitzels, but some food, I don't like,” says 14 year-old Shokria, who is originally from Afghanistan. “I miss some special food from Afghanistan.” Shokria left her home when her father was killed and has been in Vienna for nearly two years. Her story is just one of many perspectives on child refugees examined by the July edition of the OFID Quarterly magazine, which is circulating as of today.

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has signed a US$50m loan agreement with Pakistan to support the wide-ranging Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Program. The program aims at lifting socio-economic constraints in a region of some 4.6 million people that has witnessed years of regional instability resulting in high numbers of internally displaced people who have lost their livelihood and homes.

Water: Are we all too wet behind the ears?

March 22 marked World Water Day; a day when we’re all supposed to take action to tackle the water crisis. But how many people even know there’s a crisis to be tackled? Certainly, a good few in the developing world will be aware that there’s something not quite right, since a full 1.8 billion of them still use a contaminated source of drinking water. This puts them at risk of contracting cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio.

A two-year project to bring safe, affordable drinking water to more than 50,000 of the poorest residents in Nairobi, Kenya, has now been inaugurated after successful completion earlier this year. The initiative was co-funded by OFID (the OPEC Fund for International Development), the UK Government’s Department for International Development and Borealis and Borouge through their joint corporate social responsibility programme Water for the World™. Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP) was responsible for implementation and project management.
