09th March - Tonga Red Cross Society in their capacity building trains more community facilitators to assist disaster preparedness during cyclone season. Disaster Management Program increases numbers of disaster management trainers opens a week long training in Neiafu for 16 new facilitators including participants from ‘Eua, Tongatapu, Ha’apai and Vava’u in Neiafu, Vava’u this week.

04 February 2015 It’s February and Ministry of Health declared Dengue outbreak in Tonga. Secretary General, Sione Taumoefolau met up with Dr. Reynold ‘Ofanoa, from Public Health to discuss further action in response to the increasing case of Dengue in Vaiola Hospital.

Five months on from Tropical Cyclone Ian the recovery continues with the help of materials from New Zealand Red Cross. The cyclone killed one person and injured 14, and displaced about 2000 people in the Ha’apai island group, including 68-year-old grandmother Hulita Poutele.

02 July 2014 The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in the Australian High Commission, Tonga granted Tonga Red Cross Society (TRCS)’s project proposal for new relief stores for island of Niua Fo’ou and a new relief store in Fua’amotu Domestic Airport. The proposal also covered replenishments of relief stocks to the TRCS relief stores after the disaster response for Tropical Cyclone Ian (TC Ian) and also rebuilding TRCS relief store in Ha’ano that was destroyed by TC Ian early January 2014.
