Thursday 6 December 2018, Ramallah – To commemorate the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence, the Representative Office of Canada to the Palestinian Authority and UN Women organized a 16 Days of Activism event in Ramallah today, inviting women survivors of violence, singer Bashar Murad, and hip hop group DAM, as part of the Haya: Eliminating Violence against Women joint programme launched in May this year.

25 November - Around 87,000 women were killed around the world last year, some 50,000 - or 58 per cent - at the hands of intimate partners or family members. This amounts to some six women being killed every hour by people they know, according to new research published by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) today.

Area under opium poppy cultivation decreased by 20% since 2017 but remains at very high levels

The total opium poppy cultivation area in Afghanistan was estimated at 263,000 (242,000 – 283,000) hectares in 2018, a 20% or 65,000 hectares decrease compared to the previous year. It is the second highest measurement since the beginning of systematic opium poppy monitoring and recording in 1994. The level of 2018 exceeds the third highest level of 2014 by 17% or 39,000 hectares.

Coca Crops in Colombia at all-time high, UNODC Report finds

19 September 2018 - The area under coca cultivation in Colombia reached the highest ever recorded figure of 171,000 hectares (ha) in 2017, according to UNODC's Coca Cultivation Survey Report for Colombia, launched in Bogota today. This represents an increase of 25,000 hectares, or 17 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016.

At least 2.5 million migrants were smuggled in 2016, according to the first Global Study on Smuggling of Migrants released by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) today. Migrant smuggling occurred in all regions of the world and generated an income for smugglers of up to US$7 billion, equivalent to what the United States or the European Union countries spent on global humanitarian aid in 2016.

El Director Ejecutivo de la Oficina de las Naciones Unidas contra la Droga y el Delito, Yury Fedotov, visitó Colombia y sostuvo un encuentro con el Presidente Juan Manuel Santos, en el cual dialogaron acerca del apoyo de UNODC para la construcción de paz en el país.

En noviembre de 2017, Colombia y UNODC firmaron un acuerdo para monitorear la política de reducción de cultivos ilícitos y fortalecer el desarrollo rural en apoyo al proceso de paz adelantado con las FARC.
