Nauru's Minister for Multicultural Affairs, David Adeang, has revealed that those refugees who have arrived in Nauru from Manus Island are settling in well.

The comments come just over a week after the first refugees from Manus arrived on Nauru, where they were welcomed by the Acting Secretary for Multicultural Affairs and local service providers.

They were also given a cultural introduction to Nauru which included an island tour, and provided with an overview of the extensive support available.

The Government of Nauru has welcomed news that refugees on the island will be resettled in the United States and has commended the Australian Government for its handling of the process.

Minister for Justice David Adeang said while the Government has consistently sought to correct false reports about conditions and safety of the refugees, it has also always stated the need to find suitable third countries for permanent resettlement.

The Government has confirmed that the country's Regional Processing Centre that houses asylum seekers will become an 'open centre' 24 hours per day, seven days per week from today.

The Department of Justice and Border Control explained that this meant that detention had ended, and all asylum seekers are now free to move around the island at their will.

The Emergency Evacuation Policy of Nauru. In any event such as fire, earthquake, severe accident, tsunami evacuation of school buildings will be required to ensure the safe of all students, staff, parents and visitors.

The aim of the policy is to evacuate all students, staff, parents and visitors in an organised and controlled movement from a threatened danger area to a safe area; evacuate everyone from school buildings to the safe area in the minimum possible time: and to ensure that exposure to danger and the possible risk of injury are minimised.

This National Plan supports the Government's Disaster Risk Management Policy and is intended to assist the process of effectively managing hazards and risks in Nauru. It is not intended for use in its entirety during a response to a disaster. It is constructed in such a fashion that agencies and individuals can refer to relevant parts to assist the development of associated hazard mitigation, preparedness and emergency response plans.

The first group of asylum seeker families to Nauru arrived this morning (21 August) aboard a chartered flight of Nauru's national carrierOur Airline, from Christmas Island.

The 26 new arrivals are of Iranian nationality and consist of seven families - seven adult males, seven adult females and 12 children under the age of 18.

Like previous arrivals the group completed brief immigration formalities before boarding mini-buses to take them to the third Regional Processing Centre site at Topside, separated from the single male groups.
