1. Advocacy

For Watchlist advocacy, 2017 was marked by a rigorous and sustained campaign targeting the new UN Secretary-General to put children above politics. This follows several years of politicization of the Secretary-General’s annual report on children and armed conflict and its annexed list of child rights violators, including Saudi Arabia’s threat in 2016 to pull all UN funding if the Saudi-led coalition was not removed from the annexes.

June 20, 2018 – On July 9, 2018, the UN Security Council will hold its Open Debate on Children and Armed Conflict (CAC), under the presidency of Sweden, current chair of the Security Council Working Group on CAC. At the debate, the Secretary-General (SG) will present his annual report on CAC, pursuant to Security Council Resolution 2225 (2015), covering January 1 to December 31, 2017. Sweden will take the opportunity of the debate to highlight protection of children’s rights and prevention of future violations, and plans to introduce a resolution for adoption.

May 4 2018 (IPS) - When I visited South Sudan last year, I heard story after story about health professionals and humanitarian workers being prevented from doing critical work. Government officials regularly increased fees for nonprofits trying to alleviate the effects of conflict, stopped humanitarian convoys from delivering life-saving supplies, and erected bureaucratic obstacles designed to impede access to civilians in need.
