SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, May 29, 2018—As hurricane season approaches people across Puerto Rico are still reeling from last year’s devastating storms—Irma and Maria. That’s why international Christian relief organization Samaritan’s Purse is announcing a multi-year recovery plan aimed at rehabilitating more than 390 homes and 55 churches in central and southern Puerto Rico.

During the week of September 5- September 9, Category 5 hurricane Irma pounded the Caribbean. To date, Irma has caused destruction in multiple Caribbean islands. St. Martin/St. Maarten, Antigua and Barbuda, and Turks and Caicos experienced heavy wind and rain damage. According to Dutch reports, “up to 70% of the island houses [on St. Maarten] were badly damaged or destroyed.” Further reports and assessments are expected to develop as governments and non-governmental organizations begin assessing island damage.

Samaritan’s Purse Northern Iraq DART team is currently on the ground supporting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as they arrive in displacement camps east and north of Mosul.

Samaritan’s Purse is a preferred partner with World Food Programme (WFP) working in six IDP camps. An agreement is in place to serve 30,000 families for a minimum of 3 months in 6 assigned camps and also provide ready-to-eat food to people returning to villages recently cleared by coalition forces.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Maban County is located in Upper Nile State in the North East of the Republic of South Sudan (RSS). The refugee caseload is composed of Sudanese fleeing from the conflict in Blue Nile State, residing in four camps: Doro, Yusuf Batil, Gendrassa and Kaya (previously Jamam). The region is a semi-arid desert with sparse vegetation and no surface water. The climate is harsh with extreme temperatures during the dry season and flooding at the rainy season.

Yida refugee settlement and Ajuong Thok refugee camp are located in Pariang County of Unity State in South Sudan. The refugees are from South Kordofan State of the neighbouring Sudan where there is ongoing fighting between the rebel group Sudan People’s Liberation Army – North (SPLA-N) and the Sudan government’s Sudan Armed Forces (SAF). At the time of the survey, the refugee population at Yida refugee settlement was 69,920 while Ajuong Thok had a population of 31,265.

- Samaritan’s Purse is targeting the needs of 50,000 HH. This will cover all the VDCs that have been assigned through government and partner coordination, as well as additional small projects outside of our primary areas of operation
- We currently have a 51 person DART based in Nepal, spread between Kathmandu, Nuwakot, Dhading, Rusuwa and Dolakha. There is also a 6 person DART procurement and logistics team based in Delhi, India.
