Displacement Waves from Rural Idleb, Aleppo and Hama in Syria
Situation Report | Issue No. 02
Introduction and Sequence of Events:
Since the beginning of November 2017, the eastern side of Hama governorate, which is under the control of the opposition forces, has been witnessing an escalation of military actions by the Syrian regime forces. The regime has increased the volume of the shelling, as its advancing has led to the flight of most of the civilians from these sub-districts towards the southern countryside of Idleb. The number of IDPs from Al-Saa’n, Elhamra, Oqeirbat, and Suran sub-districts reached 72,760 IDPs.
Damascus has been administratively divided into two governorates due to its large population. Damascus governorate, the capital of Syria, and Rural Damascus which consists of the countryside surrounding Damascus City. Rural Damascus is commonly called Ghota, and it is divided into Eastern Ghota and Western Ghota.
Purpose of the Report
The Status of Service Provision in Idleb City report was written upon the request of several stakeholders. The report is considered a pilot project, to be used as a proof of concept for IMU’s new, mixed methods research methodology. The report provides information about the status of service provision in Idleb City, as well as public opinions of these services.
Following a feedback process, the IMU will produce a report that assesses services in communities throughout Idleb province.
The ACU’s Information Management Unit launched the third version of its Syrian Public School Assessment Report, to highlight the impact of the Syrian conflict on education and the needs of students and school supplies. The questionnaire for this report was developed from questionnaires used in previous reports in order to reach several indicators.
The report consists of 12 sections in addition to the methodology:
The Information Management Unit (IMU) of the Assistance Coordination Unit (ACU) conducted a multi-sectoral assessment for the sixth release of its periodical Dynamic Monitoring Report (DYNAMO). A total of 105 sub-districts within 11 governorates were assessed to give a comprehensive account of the humanitarian situation there, and to inform a proper response in all sectors.
The Humanitarian Situation in Eastern Ghota
Due to its large population, Damascus has been divided into two governorates. Damascus governorate, the capital of Syria, and Rural Damascus which consists of the countryside surrounding Damascus City. Rural Damascus is commonly called Ghota, and it is divided into Eastern Ghota and Western Ghota.
Ein Elfijeh Sub-district is located in the west of Damascus City and administratively belongs to Az- Zabdani District in Rural Damascus Governorate. Ein Elfijeh consists of six towns and contains Ein Elfijeh water spring that feeds all Damascus neighborhoods with water. According to estimate statistics of 2011, the population in Ein Elfijeh was 24,432 individuals.
Oqeirbat Sub-district is located within As- Salamiyeh District in Hama Governorate. Oqeirbat is located on the Eastern side of Hama and borders Tadmor Sub-district in Homs Governorate and Aleppo Governorate.
IDPs in Northern Syria camps suffer from bad living conditions especially with the advent of winter season. On the other hand, the increased IDPs’ numbers make the provided aid by humanitarian organizations insufficient and does not cover all IDPs’ needs. It is worth noting that late humanitarian response and delay in sending emergency materials delayed the humanitarian Implementation of winter projects and negatively affected IDPs.
