ARLINGTON, VA – IRD, which has provided medical supplies to local partners in Sierra Leone and Liberia assisting those suffering from Ebola, is partnering with Peace Builders, Medshare and The Village Link to transport additional medical aid to Sierra Leone. IRD regularly coordinates the transport of medical and other humanitarian aid to vulnerable people in countries around the world.

ARLINGTON, VA – IRD and the United Nations partnered to deliver 12 tons of emergency relief to hospitals in the contested area of Slovyanoserbsk, Luhansk oblast, Ukraine. The convoy was organized in response to reports that the Slavyanoserbsk general and psychiatric hospitals and the Lyutikovskiy regional psychiatric hospital were in catastrophic condition, with no heat and little food. Patients were starving and there was an urgent need for heaters, warm clothing, blankets, and hygiene items.

Victims of armed conflict in La Montañita, a municipality in the department of Caquetá in south Colombia, inaugurated a new service center to provide assistance in a safe and dignified space Dec. 3.

The Victims Unit and municipal government worked with International Relief & Development (IRD) to refurbish a 1200 square foot office next to the town hall. Previously victims and public officials were working in a dilapidated building or traveling across town from one office to another.

Safe Spaces: Both the CP and SGBV SWGs completed work on safe spaces in August 2014, with (i) the CP SWG completing the mapping of all CFS in Jordan and (ii) the SGBV SWG completing a policy paper on Safe Spaces for Women and Girls. Both documents are available on the Inter-Agency Information Sharing Portal.

ARLINGTON, VA – This August IRD led the effort to administer polio vaccinations to all the Syrian refugee children under age 5 in the Za’atari refugee camp in northern Jordan. The activity required the coordinated efforts of 120 trained volunteer healthcare workers, who canvassed the camp district by district to ensure all children were reached and vaccinated.

Inter-Agency Strengthening SGBV and Child Protection Services and Systems Project In June 2014, orientation sessions on the AMANI campaign were conducted in Zaatari and Azraq for field-staff from the Child Protection and SGBV Sub-Sectors, and coordinated campaign activities organized. In June, four trainings on the SOPs and referral pathways were also conducted for humanitarian staff working in the CP and SGBV sectors as well as for service providers in other sectors.

Martial arts practitioners in San Antonio helped raise $1,268.45 for victims of the typhoon Haiyan that devastated a large swath of the Philippines in November 2013. The funds will be used to support International Relief & Development’s (IRD) efforts to clear debris, resupply hospitals, repair schools, and distribute clothing and other relief to typhoon survivors.

Today, IRD delivered World Health Organization (WHO) medical kits to three hospitals in North Cebu, Philippines. The delivery was conducted as part of IRD's ongoing work in the Philippines in the wake of the devastating Typhoon Haiyan. (Read more about IRD's work in response to the disaster here.) Hospitals in the region report being overwhelmed following the typhoon, running out of needed medicines and supplies and with patients often sharing beds.

IRD Philippines Country Director Ligaya Diaz hosted a partnership agreement signing ceremony between IRD and the Monark Foundation, representing Caterpillar in the Philippines. Monark is the sole distributor of Caterpillar equipment and products in the Philippines and the Foundation is their humanitarian wing. As part of Monark-CAT's corporate social responsiblity program, Monark has contributed rent-free use of three excavators (Model 320D) and one tower light for two months. Included with Monark's contribution are three skilled operators who will operate the excavators.

On Friday, November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms in history, made landfall in the southern Philippines, laying waste to a great swath of the country. Some estimates are that 10,000 or more may have died and more than 10 million are now affected. Initial reports indicate difficulty accessing remote areas to locate survivors. Roads are destroyed or blocked with debris and affected communities have limited communications.
