The Horn of Africa faces multiple challenges from natural hazards, particularly water-related ones of drought and flooding. Other natural risks include earthquakes, landslides, volcanic activity and land degradation, among others. Certain areas of the region are arid or semi arid and have increasing populations living in highly stressed natural environments. The fight for survival and the competition for natural resources often lead to human conflict and other types of human cost.

UNOSAT 2012 mapping report shows more relief agencies rely on satellite analysis

24 April 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - UNOSAT released its annual Activity Report on its renown Humanitarian Rapid Mapping service. The report focuses on data and performance in the year 2012. Last year saw an increase in requests and delivery of UNOSAT Rapid Mapping services. A total of 35 humanitarian crisis interventions were supported by UNOSAT, primarily on requests received from UN OCHA, UNHCR, UNICEF and The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, OHCHR.

February 2013, Geneva, Switzerland - In 2003 UNOSAT initiated tests of the first version of its Humanitarian Rapid Mapping service, dedicated to supporting humanitarian decision making and ground operations by increasing situational awareness with just-in-time analysis of disaster and crisis areas using optical and radar satellite data. After the first three experimental tests in 2003, the “activations” of this new service have grown each year, peaking at 47 per year in 2007.

UNOSAT released in March 2012 the latest version of its annual thematic brief, which is dedicated to “Satellite Applications for Human Security”. Each year, UNOSAT publishes a brief focusing on one of its strategic areas of work (humanitarian relief, human security, strategic territorial planning). Last year the UNOSAT Brief concentrated on Humanitarian Rapid Mapping, the service launched in 2003 that made UNOSAT known worldwide for its rapid mapping support to the international humanitarian community.
