The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society (ZRCS) has embarked on community resilience projects aimed at empowering communities so that they are able to withstand shocks such as those caused by recent disasters in Masvingo and Manicaland provinces.

The five-year project which is being funded by the British Red Cross is being implemented in Masvingo’s Mwenezi district and Chipinge in Manicaland.

In this shared experience, the Zimbabwe Red Cross Society recounts how it prepared for and responded to the increased tensions during the 2013 general elections in Zimbabwe. Owing to the volatile operating environment, the National Society encountered some obstacles in fulfilling its mandate. By describing the actions it took in response and the lessons it learnt, it hopes to help other National Societies facing similar challenges to their acceptance, security and access.

Continued rains around Zimbabwe have triggered emergencies with lives being claimed in the process. Alerts from Zimbabwe Red Cross Society Provincial Structures highlight varrying rain induced emergencies with affected areas in dire need of humanitarian intervention. The number of affected households as of the 4th of January 2015 is over 700 according to informatiom gathered.

The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society has responded to Flash Floods that have affected Zimta Park and Dreamhouse high-desnsity residential areas in Mutare Urban in Manicaland province. The floods which are a result of heavy downpours on the night of 17 December 2014 destroyed houses, household property, blankets and swept away food reserves and an assortment of other valuables. One minor, a 6 year old girl died after being swept away while sleeping in one of the destroyed houses and her body was recovered 3 km down stream. Two other family members survived with injuries.

The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society has activated its Disaster Response Teams in response to the floods that has affected and displaced many families around Zimbabwe. As a leading humanitarian and disaster relief orgnaisation, the National Society has since responded to flooding in Masvingo, Muzarabani, Gokwe and Tsholotsho. The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society which is auxilliary to government and a member of the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) takes from the experiences of sister Red Cross Societies across the globe in its disaster response and management work.

The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society has called for support towards its ongoing response to the nationwide storm disasters and flooding as well as the Chitungwiza blast that has claimed over 15 lives to date. The storm disasters and flooding in particular have destroyed homes and killed more than 10 people, destroyed and contaminated water sources at the same time affecting food stocks and crops in the field.
