(14 February 2017) Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, a prominent Sudanese human rights defender, has been unlawfully detained for over two months, held by the National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) at Khartoum’s Kober Prison without charge or access to legal representation, 39 human rights groups and activists said.

(20 December 2016) A prominent Sudanese human rights defender (HRD), Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, is currently detained incommunicado by the country’s National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS). Dr. Mudawi was arrested at the University of Khartoum, where he is a professor, on 7 December 2016 alongside his longtime driver, Adam El Sheikh Mukhtar. Both men are currently being held without charge or access to their families and lawyers at NISS headquarters near Shande Bus Station.

Human Rights Abuses in Sudan over the Month of September 2016

Overview

Throughout the month of September 2016, SUDO (UK)’s network of human rights monitors have documented and verified 61 incidents of human rights abuses in Sudan involving eight Sudanese states. SUDO (UK) has assessed that 52 of the reports concern new instances of human rights abuses. The other nine reports concern five updates on ongoing court proceedings[2] and four reports on the release of civilians from containers in Blue Nile over the month of September.

In SUDO (UK)’s November update monitors warned on the 4th November that the Government of Sudan was preparing for what appeared to be a major offensive in the East Jebel Marra region. This build up of ground troops and military hardware – including technical vehicles, heavy artillery and tanks – was complimented by an increase in militia activity throughout the month of December around the East Jebel Marra region – as will be reported in a soon to be released SUDO (UK) report on human rights abuses throughout Sudan in December 2015.
