  • Hurricane MARIA continued moving north-west, strengthening. It passed offshore of the Dominican Republic on 21 September and was located 70 km of Grand Turk island on 22 September at 6.00 UTC, as a category 3 hurricane.
  • Heavy rain, strong winds and storm surge could still affect central and southeastern Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Puerto Rico, northern and eastern Dominican Republic, northern Haiti as well as US and British Virgin Islands on 22-24 September.

  • Hurricane Maria, made landfall on Dominica on evening of September 18, 2017 as a category 5 Hurricane. The Princess Margaret Hospital is reported to be severely damaged and flooded. Dialysis service damaged, and the electricity is down. Seven deaths have been reported on the island due to the storm.

  • The hurricane made landfall on Puerto Rico around 6 AM today, bringing catastrophic flash flooding. Before Hurricane Maria made landfall, there were 172 shelters housing 9,981 occupants.

  • Hurricane MARIA continued moving west-northwest over the Caribbean Sea, strengthening. It made lanfall near Yabucoa (Puerto Rico) on 20 September at around 10.30 UTC as a category 4 hurricane. On 21 September at 6.00 UTC, it was located 90 km away from the Dominican Republic as a category 3 hurricane.

  • As part of the UN-coordinated Regional Response Plan for the Caribbean Region after Hurricanes Irma and José, IOM is appealing for a total of USD 4.95 million to provide humanitarian relief, manage human mobility and facilitate a fast resilience-focused recovery in the form of technical expertise and knowledge transfer to government authorities. Humanitarian needs are expected to increase in the region, given Hurricane Maria’s latest impact.

Hurricane Maria is pounding eastern Puerto Rico after making landfall Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 storm that forecasters described as "extremely dangerous."

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Maria, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit Puerto Rico, had maximum sustained winds of about 240 kilometers per hour Wednesday morning, and that heavy rain would cause life-threatening flash floods and landslides.

The Secretary-General is saddened by the destruction across the Caribbean region by Hurricane Maria in a context where many islands are already working to respond to the devastation and suffering arising from Hurricane Irma earlier this month.

The Secretary-General commends the collaborative efforts of the various Governments, international agencies and non-governmental organizations in responding to this crisis.
