2019 Humanitarian Response Plan for the occupied Palestinian territory targets rising needs amidst new challenges

Today, the Minister of Social Development of the State of Palestine, H.E. Dr. Ibrahim Al-Shaer, and the Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Jamie McGoldrick, launched the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) for 2019 in the occupied Palestinian territory (oPt).

Today, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory, Mr. Jamie McGoldrick, expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the West Bank. Since 9 December, three Israelis and five Palestinians have been killed across the West Bank in attacks, clashes and arrest operations. Over 400 Palestinians and at least 13 Israelis were injured, and more than 200 Palestinians have reportedly been arrested.

(Juba, 13 December 2018): The humanitarian community in South Sudan has today launched an appeal for US$1.5 billion to provide urgent and life-saving assistance to 5.7 million people affected by conflict, hunger and displacement.

Alain Noudéhou, the Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan, said: “As we prepare to enter 2019, South Sudan remains in the grip of a serious humanitarian crisis. The cumulative effects of years of conflict and violence against civilians has destroyed people’s homes and livelihoods.

(Amman, 9 December 2018): The United Nations today commenced a one-off exceptional aid delivery of much needed lifesaving assistance to hundreds of thousands of women, children and men in Syria from Jordan.

Some 369 trucks carrying over 11,200 metric tonnes of multi-sectoral assistance for over 650,000 people worth one-month of supplies will be involved in the four-week operation at the Jaber/Nassib crossing. Six UN agencies and one international NGO are participating in the back-to-back transshipment delivery.

(New York, 7 December 2018): At today’s high-level pledging event for the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), 41 donors announced record pledges of US$439 million for 2019 and additional contributions for 2018, ensuring a record level of funding of $554 million to CERF for this year.

“CERF is not only the fastest and most effective way to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches people caught up in crises; it is also an essential enabler of global humanitarian action,” said United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres - at the opening of the event.

Aden, Sana’a, 1 December 2018: At the end of his mission to Yemen, Under-SecretaryGeneral for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Mark Lowcock warned that conditions had deteriorated alarmingly since his last visit.

“Yemen is on the brink of a major catastrophe,” said Mr. Lowcock. “But it is not too late. In my meetings with officials of the internationally recognized Government of Yemen in Aden and the de facto authorities in Sana’a, I was encouraged to hear strong support for relief operations.”
