New Report Looks at Past Disasters to Prepare for the Future

Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery: Are we prepared for the next Pompeii?

WASHINGTON, May 8, 2018 — The great disasters of the past – like the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD or the hurricane that devastated Santo Domingo in 1930 – can provide valuable lessons to help governments and institutions increase the resilience of communities in the face of modern challenges, such as climate change and rapid urbanization.

In 2017, EM-DAT data indicates that 318 natural disasters occurred, affecting 122 countries. The impact of which resulted in 9,503 deaths, 96 million people affected, and US$314 billion in economic damages.

The human impact of natural disasters in 2017 was much lower than the last 10 year average, where events with extremely high mortality occurred, such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti (225,570 deaths) and the 2008 Nargis Cyclone in Myanmar (138,400 deaths).

BEIJING, March 19 (Xinhua) -- China's oceanic authority on Monday called for measures to cope with rising sea levels.

A report released by the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) said that the average sea level along China's coast in 2017 was 58 mm higher than the average level between 1993 and 2011.

In the past six years, the sea level along China's coast had remained at a high level compared with the pervious 24 years.

WMO report highlights impacts on human safety, well-being and environment

6 November 2017 (WMO) - It is very likely that 2017 will be one of the three hottest years on record, with many high-impact events including catastrophic hurricanes and floods, debilitating heatwaves and drought. Long-term indicators of climate change such as increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, sea level rise and ocean acidification continue unabated. Arctic sea ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea ice extent was at or near a record low.

Natural disasters over the first semester of 2017

During the first semester of 2017, EM-DAT preliminary data shows that 149 disasters occurred in 73 countries. The impact of which resulted in 3,162 deaths, affected more than 80 million people and caused more than US$32.4 billion (A).

The major disasters were floods and landslides occurring in Asia, South America and Africa (B).

BEIJING - The Government of China has made its largest single donation to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) with US$34 million towards its emergency operations to support people who are at risk of famine in Somalia, Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen, as well as those affected by severe food shortages in Kenya and Chad.

Combined with earlier contributions, the Chinese government’s support for WFP totals more than US$138 million since 2005, and builds on China’s increasingly significant backing in recent years for WFP’s operations around the world.
