High Level Humanitarian Event on Somalia, London, 6 March 2018

Preamble

In support of The Federal Government of Somalia, the United Kingdom and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) convened an event in London on 6 March 2018 to draw urgent attention to the humanitarian crisis in Somalia and the need for a swift and substantial response.

Mogadishu, 7 December 2017: - The Somalia Humanitarian Fund (SHF) will allocate more than $12.3 million to get the famine prevention efforts for 2018 off to a timely start. These critical funds, part of the SHF Second 2017 Standard Allocation, will support 30 famine prevention projects in some of the worst-affected areas across Somalia. This standard allocation round, focusing primarily on national and international nongovernmental partners (98 per cent of funds), brings SHF funding for famine prevention response in 2017 to more than $57 million.

(Nairobi, 13 June 2017): International partners have made financial pledges in support of humanitarian response efforts in the drought-hit Horn of Africa after a visit to Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.

A delegation led by the African Union and the United Nations concluded a five-day visit to the Horn of Africa in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday, after visiting drought-affected communities in Ethiopia and Somalia. It included representatives from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the African Development Bank, the USAID Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance and the World Bank.

A US$20 million boost from the UN’s Central Emergency Fund (CERF) will go a long way in providing life-saving aid in Somalia, but it won’t be enough to halt a deepening crisis, aid agencies warn.

“These badly needed funds are critical to our humanitarian response and will go a long way towards addressing some of the most critical needs”, said Foroogh Foyouzat, Acting Representative for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Somalia. “Action is needed now and without further support, Somalia risks sliding back into crisis.”

Mogadishu, 14 July 2014: The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has allocated US$1.4 million for an emergency campaign to combat the outbreak of measles in Somalia, that has already left thousands of children at risk of disability and death. The funding will be used to vaccinate 520,000 children under 5 years in the worst affected areas of Banadir, Lower Juba and Puntland.
