Situation Overview

There has been a significant reduction in rainfall levels in the Juba and Shabelle river basins in Somalia and the Ethiopian highlands over the last two weeks, with most areas receiving only light rainfall, if any.

Situation Overview

The past week has seen a reduction in rainfall activity across Somalia and in the Ethiopian highlands, according to FAO-managed Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM). However, river levels remain high with flooding continuing along the Shabelle, while water levels are reducing down the Juba River, according to SWALIM. In Belet Weyne town and surrounding areas in Hirshabelle state, flood waters are receding while in Bulo Burto and Jalalasqi flooding levels have increased.

Situation Overview

Since making landfall in Somaliland last Saturday 19 May, the tropical cyclone Sagar has left an entire year’s worth of rain - between 150 and 200mm according to FAO-Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM) – in some parts of the north. One of the strongest storms ever recorded in Somalia produced wind gusts of up to 102 km/per hour, according to the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System, causing fatalities, flash floods, destruction of farms, infrastructures and livestock, and displacement.

The Ethiopian highlands and Juba and Shabelle basins in Somalia continued to receive moderate to heavy rains, according to FAO-managed Somalia Water and Land Information Management (SWALIM). The result has been a rapid increase in river levels causing flash and riverine flooding in many locations. Overall, rainfall has been above average over broad areas of Somalia.

Situation overview

Fighting in Lower Shabelle region continues to cause suffering for civilians. On 17 and 18 October, fighting between non-state armed actors and state-armed actors in Afgooye and Muuri caused civilian deaths, displacement and destruction of civilian and community property. While fighting in Lower Shabelle has largely been between parties to the conflict, there is a worrying shift with non-state armed actors now directly targeting civilians.

Situation overview

Since July 2016, non-state armed actors have taken control of eight locations in Bakool, Galgaduug and Hiraan regions of Somalia following the departure of international troops.
The takeover by non-state armed groups has exposed civilians to significant protection risks and further reduced humanitarian access in areas that are already hard to reach.
The locations include Rab Dhuure, Bur Dhuxelne, Garas Weyne and Tayeeglow in Bakool region; Budbud and Galcad in Galgaduud region; Moqokori, Ceel Cali and Halgan in Hiraan region.

Following relative calm, the security situation and access in Gaalkacyo has slowly improved since the last Flash Update issued on 8 December 2015. The humanitarian staff who were temporarily relocated out of Gaalkacyo due to insecurity have now returned.
