Situation Overview

The cholera outbreak in north-east Nigeria, that started on 16 August 2017, has now claimed the lives of at least 30 individuals in Borno State. The number of suspected cases stands at 1,165, with confirmed outbreaks in Maiduguri, Dikwa and Monguno.

A cholera outbreak has been reported in Borno State, northeastern Nigeria, by the State Ministry of Health. The first case was recorded on 16 August 2017.

Over 530 suspected cases had been registered as of 5 September 2017, including 23 deaths (4.3 per cent fatality rate), mainly in Muna Garage, a camp hosting about 20,000 internally displaced persons on the outskirts of the state capital Maiduguri.

The Borno State Ministry of Health in northeastern Nigeria has reported suspected cholera in Muna Garage, a camp hosting about 20,000 internally displaced persons on the outskirts of the state capital Maiduguri. A total of 152 cases of suspected cholera, including 11 deaths, as of 31 August 2017, have been reported. Three of the suspected cases are in close proximity to Muna Garage, not in the camp itself.

• The UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) has been deployed on Friday 18 September for an initial period of three weeks to support the ongoing assessments, coordination and reporting efforts.

• By 19 August, UNFPA will have finalised inventory information on the stock status at the Central Medical Store level. The results of the inventory status will be compared with findings of the rapid assessment to inform procurement of reproductive health commodities

Situation overview

• Heavy rain is still falling regularly over Freetown, making removal of debris and search for missing persons difficult. The risk of further landslides is not excluded and the Government, with the support of UNOPS, WFP and FAO, is conducting an analysis of at risk areas, most specifically a 2D and 3D mapping of the hills in Sugar Loaf neighbourhoods. The Government may recommend evacuation of additional areas, with the number of displaced people subsequently increasing.

  • Torrential rains have led to a series of significant floods and mudslides on 14 August in several areas of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. Emergency support is being provided for the two different types of responses: floods and mudslides.

  • According to Freetown Mayor, rescue workers have recovered 270 bodies so far, mainly from the Regent neighborhood where the mudslide happened. As rescue operations are still ongoing, the death toll is expected to rise.

On 31 May in the afternoon, more than 1,000 additional persons arrived unexpectedly in Pulka from Banki. Once again,responders immediately mobilized to provide urgent relief and address the most immediate needs as effectively as possible despite the lack of notice. The operationalization of the Tripartite agreement between Nigeria, Cameroon and UNHCR signed in February in Oslo is underway to enable a smoother return process for Nigerian refugees currently in Cameroon.

The movements of refugee returnees from Banki to Pulka continue and humanitarian groups continue to provide life-saving assistance despite numerous challenges, especially limitations in the water supply. On 27 May, close to 1,300 women, children and men arrived in school buses and trucks, carrying their remaining possessions (such as bicycles, chickens, mattresses, water jugs, and other items).

Humanitarian groups continue to provide life-saving assistance to thousands of Nigerian refugees who have returned from Cameroon over the past few weeks and who are transitioning through Banki to Pulka and other towns.

In the past weeks, the humanitarian community has witnessed an increasing trend of refugee returns from Cameroon into Borno State. In particular, thousands of returnees are returning from Minawao camp in Cameroon through Banki, where humanitarian actors are already providing life-saving response to affected populations in IDP camps.

Many of these returnees are then continuing their journey to their various areas of origin in particular to Pulka and Gwoza (Gwoza LGA), where humanitarian response efforts are ongoing as well.

  • A cause de l’insécurité dans les localités des régions de Tahoua et de Tillabery frontalières du Mali et du Burkina Faso, les autorités nigériennes ont déclaré l’état d’urgence dans deux départements1 de la région de Tahoua et dans cinq départements2 de la région de Tillabéry le 3 mars, pour une période initiale de 15 jours. Cette mesure a été reconduite pour une durée de trois mois. Selon les informations non exhaustives recueillies sur le terrain, 24 attaques visant principalement les positions militaires ont été enregistrées depuis février 2016.

  • As of 25 January, International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) medical teams had performed surgeries on 78 people injured during the military airstrike on Rann on 17 January. In Rann itself, 107 people were treated.

  • Those who underwent operations had broken limbs, suffered burns or shrapnel wounds.
