Heavy rain and flooding since early June have affected over 99,000 people and destroyed over 19,000 houses in many parts of Sudan, according to the Government of Sudan and partners. The most affected states are White Nile, South Darfur, North Kordofan, Al Gezira, Sennar, West Darfur and Kassala.

The Emergency Relief Coordinator has allocated $45 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for the 2017 second underfunded emergencies round to assist vulnerable people in four neglected crises. The funds will support life-saving relief operations in Afghanistan, the Central African Republic (CAR), Chad and Sudan, where humanitarian suffering is alarmingly high, but available resources are critically low.

In Darfur, fighting between government forces and armed movements has continued in recent years, lately in the Jebel Marra area. This continues to severely impact civilians, notably women and children. Inter-tribal tensions also continue to trigger conflict, which causes displacement of civilians and disruption of basic services. Conflict also prevents the return of displaced people to their areas of origin. Although access to some areas is ongoing, access to other areas, including where there is active conflict, remains denied.

This Humanitarian Snapshot provides an overview of the humanitarian situation in Sudan, as of 30 September 2016, using information obtained from UN agencies and partners, including the Government of Sudan. People living in protracted displacement in Darfur since 2003 and those displaced or affected by conflict in South Kordofan and Blue Nile States since 2011 account for most people in need of humanitarian aid.

OVERVIEW

From January to end August 2016, the Sudan Humanitarian Fund allocated a total of US$31 million through the first allocation and the Reserve for Emergencies.

The first allocation responded to the needs of new and protracted displacement cases in the Darfur states, South and West Kordofan states and Blue Nile, focused on the mainstreaming of protection in three localities in South Kordofan and supported vital nutrition work in El Nino-affected areas in eastern Sudan. The SHF also supported the ongoing response to refugees in White Nile state.
