The United Nations has appointed Knut Ostby of Norway as ad interim United Nations Resident Coordinator in Myanmar where he will serve also on an ad interim basis as the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme. Mr. Ostby will serve in these functions from 1 November until further notice.

The UN appreciates the Government of Myanmar’s invitation to participate in the visit to northern Rakhine organized by national authorities for diplomatic community and the UN.

This was a positive step and such visits, under appropriate conditions, could help in our efforts to explore potential areas where the UN could cooperate with the Myanmar authorities in alleviating the dire situation in northern Rakhine.

25 August 2017 - The UN condemns in the strongest terms the series of coordinated attacks carried out against the Myanmar security forces in northern areas of Rakhine State in the early hours on 25 August. We regret the loss of life, express deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

We call on all parties to refrain from violence, protect civilians, restore law and order and resolve issues through dialogue and peaceful means.

16 year old Fatima lives with her husband, Usanama, and their baby in a makeshift shelter in Thae Chaung camp near Sittwe in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.

Almost 12,000 mostly Kaman Muslim people live in Thae Chaung in flimsy dirt-floored shacks made of tarpaulins stretched over bamboo.

These structures provided little protection when Cyclone Mora brought destructive winds and rain to Rakhine State at the end of May.

June 2017 is a sad anniversary for hundreds of thousands of people in Myanmar. In Kachin and Shan States, it has been 6 years since the civil war broke out and at least 98,000 people are still displaced. In Rakhine State, about 120,000 people continue to live in camps after they fled outbreaks of violence 5 years ago. These numbers don’t tell the full story.

In January 2017, baby Ying Lawm was born on the side of a road in no-man’s land, not far from the frontlines of war-ravaged Kachin State. The baby’s young mother, Bauk Seng Pan, gave birth while on the run from one of the world’s longest running civil wars. After five years of displacement, Bauk Seng Pan dreams that she and her family will one day be able to return home and resume a normal life.

12 May 2017 description

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar, Ms Renata Dessallien, visited Kachin State from 7-9 May 2017 to meet with people displaced by armed conflict, senior Government officials, civil society organizations and humanitarian partners.

Ms Dessallien met with U Khat Aung, Chief Minister of Kachin State as well as representatives of humanitarian and other organizations including the Joint Strategy Team (JST) to discuss the humanitarian and development needs of all communities in Kachin State.

Myanmar is leading the way in embracing the contribution of local partners, in line with commitments made at the World Humanitarian Summit in 2016. This includes record allocations from the Myanmar Humanitarian Fund (MHF) directly to national organizations.

Yangon, Myanmar, 30 January, 2017. The UN Resident Coordinator in Myanmar condemns in the strongest terms the killing of U Ko Ni who was shot dead at the Yangon airport on 29 January, 2017 and expresses her sincerest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of U Ko Ni. She also condemns the killing of U Nay Win who made a heroic attempt to apprehend the assailant, extends her heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and co-workers, and salutes his bravery and sacrifice.
