Yangon 15 June 2012 - A United Nations team led by Mr. Vijay Nambiar, Special Advisor to the Secretary-General and Mr. Ashok Nigam, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, visited Maungdaw, in Rakhine State on 13-14 June. Mr. Nambiar was in Myanmar for the Peace Donor Support Group meeting. On 8 June, serious disturbances occurred in Rakhine State which led to the Government declaring a state of emergency in the State. The UN also temporarily relocated, on a voluntary basis, some of its staff that were based in Maungdaw, Buthidaung and Sittwe.
Yangon, 30 March 2012. United Nations convoys carrying emergency relief supplies to internally displaced people (IDPs) in two locations affected by the conflict in Kachin State have now returned to base after distributing these items in the IDP camps. “Reaching all IDPs in Kachin with humanitarian assistance is critically important.
This joint effort has been possible through receiving the cooperation of the Government and the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO), as well as our humanitarian partners on the ground,” said Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ashok Nigam.
Yangon, 25 March 2012. A United Nations convoy carrying essential items has reached some of the displaced population in the areas affected by the conflict in the Kachin State .
“Recognizing the critical importance of assisting IDPs (internally displaced persons) in accordance with the humanitarian principles, we hope that this will now lead to a sustained delivery of aid by the UN and its humanitarian partners to the IDPs, " said Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ashok Nigam.
24 January 2012 : After more than a decade of cease-fire, more than 50,000 people have been displaced in Kachin State by recent fighting - the majority of whom are children and women. As skirmishes moved close to villages, people fled their homes, carrying few household possessions with them. Internally displaced people have sought refuge in local shelters, temporary camps and in host families. Recent assessments revealed a shortage of emergency shelter and non-food items, including warm clothing and blankets, as well as basic food and hygiene items.
Yangon 15 December 2011 - Instability in Kachin State started in June 2011 and resulted in the displacement of people, loss of lives and livelihoods, and damage to infrastructure.
The Kachin State Government, Myanmar Red Cross Society, national NGOs, community-based organizations, churches and monasteries, as well as other parties, with the support of UN agencies and international NGOs, have been providing some assistance to the IDPs , since June, with the resources they had available.
