Yangon, Myanmar, 20 Dec 2016 – On behalf of the UN system in Myanmar, the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Ms. Renata Dessallien welcomes the convening by the Government of Myanmar of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat on 19 December in Yangon and its outcome.

The UN system has repeatedly condemned the attacks that began in Maungdaw and Rathedaung in Rakhine State on 9 October, expressed condolences for the loss of life and urged restraint, full humanitarian access and independent and a credible investigation into allegations of serious human rights violations.

(Yangon, 14 October 2016) - Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Stephen O’Brien, concluded his three-day mission to Myanmar today. His trip took place shortly after the outbreak of violence in the northern part of Rakhine State and at a time of escalating armed clashes in Kachin. He expressed deep concern regarding recent developments and called for all sides to find peaceful ways to resolve differences rather than choosing the path of violence.

The UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator in Myanmar strongly condemns the violent attacks and killings in Maungdaw district. She has expressed to the authorities her condolences for the death of the border guard police personnel and is deeply saddened by all loss of life. She is also very concerned about the unfolding situation and has conveyed this to the Government. The UN continues to follow the situation, urging that rule of law be fully respected, civilians be protected and all efforts made to deescalate tensions.

I am saddened by the reports of lives lost and damage caused by earthquakes today in Italy and Myanmar, and wish to convey my condolences to the peoples and governments of both countries.

In Italy, Accumoli, Amatrice and other towns in the Central Appennines were struck early this morning by a 6M earthquake and two major aftershocks, with local sources reporting that up to 60 people have been killed and 150 remain unaccounted for. Some 2,500 people are reported to have been displaced. National responders are leading the response effort.

Myanmar version

(YANGON: 14 June 2016): Heavy monsoon rains since the beginning of June have caused flooding in five states and regions of Myanmar. According to the initial reports from the Government Relief and Resettlement Department, at least 26,000 people are affected in Ayeyarwady, Bago and Sagaing regions as well as Chin and Rakhine states. A total of 14 deaths have been reported from the Union-level Relief and Resettlement Department, media sources and the Rakhine State Government.

Statement attributable to Ms Janet Jackson, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator (A.I.) in Myanmar

(YANGON: 20 April 2016). I was deeply saddened by the tragedy which unfolded on 19 April when a boat locally reported to be transporting more than 60 people capsized in rough waters near Thae Chaung in Sittwe Township.

(YANGON: 14 April 2016). A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Sagaing region in north- western Myanmar on 13 April at 20:27 local time (13:55 UTC, 13 April 2016). The United Nations and partners are working closely with the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, in particular with the Department of Relief and Resettlement and local authorities as well as with the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology to determine the impact of the earthquake.

Yangon, 12 March 2016 – Today, the Government of Myanmar released 46 children and young people who were recruited and used by the Armed Forces. This is the first discharge to take place in 2016.

Yangon, 2 March, 2016.- The United Nations expresses its deep concern over rising tensions and armed clashes in Northern Shan State which are having a direct and negative impact on the civilian population. While the fighting has subsided in recent days and some people have been able to return home, nearly 3,400 people remain displaced in Kyaukme Township and over 1,200 displaced people are still in shelters in Mong Wee, Namhkam Township. The UN, along with the Government and other actors, has provided relief materials and services.
