Cyprus - IOM yesterday (22/02) conducted its first family reunification in Cyprus in coordination with Cyprus’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and partners. The joint action reunited a 7-year-old Syrian girl with her father, mother and siblings.

The girl travelled from Syria via Jordan, where IOM Amman provided her with airport assistance and an escort for the journey. She was reunited with her family at Larnaca International Airport last night (22/02).

Nicosia, 11/12/2015. “The readiness of Cyprus to receive asylum seekers in the context of the EU relocation scheme is promising. However, I remain seriously concerned about the grave shortcomings of the national asylum system. The authorities need to redouble their efforts to improve reception conditions and fully align domestic asylum procedures with European human rights standards” said today Nils Muižnieks, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, at the end of his five-day visit to Cyprus.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is making a EUR 5 million contribution to the Migrant and Refugee Fund (MRF) recently established by the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB). This is the largest donor contribution to date. EIB President Werner Hoyer and CEB Governor Rolf Wenzel signed the contribution agreement today at the CEB’s headquarters in Paris.

“Witnessing the potential impact that mines can have on people and communities, years after the end of conflict, brings home the humanitarian importance of the UN's de-mining efforts in Cyprus,” Mr. Craig said.

20 January 2011 - United Nations de-miners have removed over 27,000 landmines from the buffer zone in Cyprus over the past six years, the UN envoy to the country said today, while announcing that the mine action programme will come to an end next month due to lack of access to remaining minefields.

"Now having reached a critical stage, we are at the point where the current UN de-mining operations in Cyprus will come to an end," said Lisa Buttenheim, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Cyprus.

Many areas have been flooded on 27 February, 2010 because of the heavy rainfall in Girne (Kyrenia) and Lefkosa (Nicosia). The information received so far has revealed that there had been no case of death or injury but, more than 3000 people have been affected .

Additionally,700 homes, 56 offices and 27 vehicles had been informed to be damaged. Norh Cyprus Red Crescent Society has already launched assessment and psycho-social response activities in the most affected 13 areas .

North Cyprus Turkish Red Crescent is planning to distribute 700 food packages and 1000 blanket to victims.
