ABIDJAN–Le Programme Alimentaire Mondial des Nations Unies (PAM) et le Gouvernement de la Côte d’Ivoire ont signé aujourd’hui un mémorandum d’entente portant sur la création d’un Centre d’Excellence Régional contre la faim et la malnutrition en Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre. Ce Centre de référence à promouvoir et partager les connaissances et meilleures pratiques pour assurer que personne ne souffre de la faim et de la malnutrition dans la région.

ABIDJAN – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Government of Cote d’Ivoire today signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the creation of a Centre of Excellence Against Hunger and Malnutrition in West and Central Africa. It will serve as an enhanced knowledge management repository of best practices that contribute to achieving the goal of ensuring no one goes hungry in the region.

Finding Solutions
Voluntary repatriation is the most viable durable solution for Ivorian refugees in West Africa. UNHCR also pursues local integration and resettlement, the latter as a protection tool. UNHCR in Côte d’Ivoire has been implementing community-based programmes to address the needs and improve the living conditions of returnees, refugees, former IDPs, and stateless people.

Aucune amnistie ne devrait s’appliquer aux crimes de guerre, crimes contre l’humanité et autres graves violations des droits humains commises en Côte d’Ivoire pendant la crise post-électorale de 2010-2011, ont déclaré aujourd’hui onze organisations de défense des droits humains ivoiriennes et internationales.

There should be no amnesty for those responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity and other serious human rights violations committed in Côte d’Ivoire’s 2010-11 post-election crisis, 11 national and international human rights groups said today.

Contrary to all commitments for justice since 2011, President Alassane Ouattara announced on August 6, 2018 that he would grant an amnesty to 800 people accused of or convicted of crimes related to the 2010-11 crisis or subsequent attacks against the state, which could include people implicated in serious human rights crimes.

Vienna, Austria, August 2, 2018. OFID – the OPEC Fund for International Development - has signed public sector loan agreements with Côte d’Ivoire and Malawi to help boost socio-economic development and living standards.

The agreements, totaling US$34 million, were signed by OFID Director-General Suleiman J Al-Herbish and Roger A Kacou, Ambassador of Côte d’Ivoire to Austria, and Michael B Kamphambe Nkhoma, Ambassador of Malawi to Germany.

Côte d’Ivoire has a more developed public health system than many of its neighbors, but a series of crises and conflicts between 2000 and 2012 weakened health systems and intensified the inequalities between urban and rural areas. However, progress has been made, largely due to a concentrated effort involving the government and national and international partners, including the Global Fund. The Millennium Development Goals of halting and reversing the spread of HIV and malaria have been met, and the country has recently achieved universal coverage of mosquito nets.

Description of the disaster

On the night of 18 to 19 June 2018, stormy rainfall of unprecedented intensity fell on the Côte d’Ivoire capital, Abidjan and many other cities. Following this heavy downpour, several neighbourhoods in Abidjan and in country towns including Tiassalé, Toulepleu, Sanpedro registered significant material and human damage caused by ensuing floods and accompanying landslides in some high-risk areas. These landslides occurred in mainly illegal settlements and Government is taking steps to relocate residents.

The UN Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) completed its mandate on June 30, 2017, after more than thirteen years. One year later, the secretary-general is set to release his “comprehensive study of the role of UNOCI in the settlement of the situation” in the country. This presents an opportunity to examine the many stages or “lives” of a peacekeeping operation, something often overlooked.
