Between 15 and 16 February 2016, WHO was notified of the first autochthonous cases of Zika virus infection on the islands of Bonaire and Aruba. These islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and are situated in the southern part of the Caribbean region, just north of the Venezuelan coast. Aruba is an autonomous, self-governing constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, while Bonaire is a special municipality of the Netherlands.

Hurricanes currently beating down on several Caribbean countries are a major concern to the Organization of American States, with Secretary General José Miguel Insulza today expressing sympathy over the loss of life in Haiti and other countries in the Caribbean. Particular concern was expressed over the impact of hurricane Emily on Grenada.

The Secretary General said the OAS has already begun consultations with the mechanisms of the inter-American system and with other key international bodies to determine what assistance can be rendered.

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, July 13 (Reuters) - The fifth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season grew into a hurricane on Wednesday as it churned through the Windward Islands of the eastern Caribbean.

Emily's sustained winds hit 90 mph (144 kph) as it approached Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines and threatened Venezuela and the Netherlands Antilles.

At 11 p.m. EDT on Wednesday (0300 GMT on Thursday), the center of Hurricane Emily was about 45 miles (72 km) east-southeast of Grenada and moving to the west at 18 mph (29 kph), the U.S.

The Dutch government is giving 458,000 euro to assist the people of Aruba, hit by Hurricane Ivan. The aid for Aruba is a contribution to an appeal raised by the Aruban Red Cross, aimed at assisting the worst affected victims.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also making 250,000 euro available for the victims of Hurricane Jeanne in Haiti. The International Federation of the Red Cross will use the money for direct emergency aid (food, blankets, etcetera), drinking water, and shelter.
