Communities hit by wildfires in Portugal are beginning to recover, one month after the blazes claimed more than 60 lives and forced hundreds from their homes.

Leiria and Coimbra districts were among those badly affected by the worst fires in Portugal’s history.

The Portuguese Red Cross has been on the ground supporting people since the day of the tragedy and its work continues.

The European Commission has helped mobilise substantial support for Portugal, through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, following a request for assistance to battle forest fires in the country. Spain has offered over 163 firefighters, 27 vehicles and 4 firefighting aircraft – two air tractor aircraft from the EU buffer capacity (FIREGUS) and two Canadair aircraft - which are currently operating in the affected areas.

Portugal continues to endure a very serious situation in terms of forest fires facing over 200 forest fires a day with major fires in Aveiro, Leiria, Santarém, Castel Branco and Coimbra districts. According to media, as of 14 August at 07:30 (UTC), 40 people were injured and dozens were temporary displaced.
